VALENCIA – While the Stars would begin their 2048 campaign with a win (over Sacramento), the first of half of their season would be a mixed bag. Prior to the all-star break, Valencia would continue to struggle against the better teams in the Frick. The Stars would compile a 6-19 record against the six eventual playoff teams prior to the all-star break, while going 37-27 against the rest of their schedule, for a total record of 43-46.

Standouts for the Stars in this period included three starting pitchers. All-star Ken Arroyo, with an ERA of 2.58, won eight games in 18 starts for the team. On July 3rd Arroyo allowed just three base runners in eight innings in a game at San Fernando. Mike Dixon also had a good first half on the mound, earning an ERA of 2.24 in his 18 starts. Harold Newbold would start the season in the bullpen, but would shortly transition into the rotation, where he excelled, tallying an ERA of 2.45. On May 22nd, he struck out ten, walked one, and allowed just three hits in 8 1/3 innings against the Mounties at home.

The other side of the ledger did not fare as well. Kenan Reis's .923 OPS would pace the team offensively, but he had little support. Lee Stone would contribute an .829 OPS, primarily as a designated hitter. And that was about it. Run production would be a weak spot for the team throughout the year.

The Stars best all-around game from this period came on June 1st, in Nashville, when Dixon pitched 8 1/3 innings of shut-out ball and Ron Smith closed the door in the ninth in a 6-0 victory over the Blue Birds. Dennis French and Luis Fernández would each contribute a home run, and three runs batted in between them. All Valencia starters in the lineup, with the exception of Gene Meade, would collect at least one hit that night.
