Santa Clarita Valley Journal | 2049 Stars Surpass Last Year's Club (49.07)

VALENCIA – This year's Stars team has already surpassed 2048's version in one telling stat. In the previous season, the Stars accumulated a team Wins Above Replacement of 34.55 (19th best in the BBA) en route to a 78-84 season (17th best record in the BBA). As of this evening, with 34 games still to be played, the Stars have a team WAR of 36.11 (8th best in the BBA) and a team record of 73-55 (6th best in the BBA).

The quality of baseball on display at Dunn Field continues to improve. Current team leaders in WAR are pitchers Ken Arroyo (3.8) and Carlton Day (3.0), and position players third baseman Kenan Reis (3.7), and first baseman Juan Mateo (2.9). Reis, on pace for 4.7 WAR this season, has actually seen his production at the plate decrease a tick, though his defensive statistics have improved significantly this year.

It continues to be the case that most of the team WAR for the Stars is coming from run prevention, with pitchers contributing 19.84 WAR to the hitters' 16.27 (and some of the latter figure is coming from play in the field). We've spoken about the run-scoring environment of the Frick as whole in the past, which is still very low, with league ERA sitting at 3.86, which would be second lowest all time if it holds (last year set a new record for league ERA at 3.83). The current league batting average of .253 would be the third lowest all time (last season's .251 was second lowest). It remains lean times for fans of balls in play, with the past six seasons being the worst for batting average in the history of the league, and this year proving no exception.

Morris, you've done a great job this year. Something tells me you will get a lot of GM of the Year votes.
