2048 Stars Surpass Last Year's Club

Santa Clarita Valley Journal

VALENCIA – This year's Stars team has already surpassed 2047's version in one telling stat. In the previous season, the Stars accumulated a team Wins Above Replacement of 11.36 (29th best in the BBA) on route to a surprising 70-92 season (24th best record in the BBA). As of this evening, with just 57 games played, the Stars have a team WAR of 12.14 (18th best in the BBA) and a team record of 27-30 (tied for 17th in the BBA).

All of this is another way of saying that Stars fans have been treated to a better quality product this year over last. Team leaders in WAR are pitchers Ken Arroyo (2.8) and Mike Dixon (2.0), no surprise, and catcher Luis Fernández (1.3), which was likely not anticipated by any in the Stars front office. Fernández has done his damage in just 14 starts and exactly one plate appearance per game, and has put up a wRC+ of 249. Holding him out of one of the lighter-hitting lineups in the league is making increasingly less sense.

Most of the team WAR for the Stars is coming from run prevention, with pitchers contributing 8.41 WAR to the hitters' 3.73 (and some of the latter figure is coming from play in the field). This in part is a reflection of the run-scoring environment of the Frick as whole, which is way down. In fact, it is at a historic low, with league ERA sitting at 3.74, which would be an all time low if it holds, and league batting average at .249, which would tie the previous record for hitter futility set in in 2044. It's lean times for fans of balls in play, with the past fives seasons being the worst for batting average in the history of the league, and this year proving no exception.
