Jackson Gem & Archuleta Heroics See Stars Clinch Long Beach Road Series

LONG BEACH – Seven scoreless innings from Valencia starter Greg Jackson set the tone for his team in its 6-3 victory in Friday night's rubber match against the Surfers. Left hander Jackson struck out five, allowed no runs, just four hits, and no walks in seven innings of work.

Jackson would leave the game with a 5-0 lead, helped in part by a solo home run and RBI double from outfielder Gene Meade. Another solo home run in the eighth, this time by Fernando Archuleta, would make it 6-0.

Shaky outings from three bullpen arms would almost give the game away. Things would get interesting when reliever Jorge Garciá would allow a run in the eighth, but he would later get bailed out by Archuleta who would gun down Luis Costello (trying to tag on a Mike O'Hanley fly out) at the plate. Garciá would get into difficulty again, allowing a one-out single to José Lopéz in the ninth, necessitating a pitching change. Gerardo Rea would fare no better, allowing the inherited runner score after a Francisco Martínez double and Josh Mesh sacrifice. A walk of Stephen Shelton would put runners on the corners.

Having seen enough of Rea, coach Mel Jenkins would call on closer John Olson. A Francisco Otero single would score Martínez from third and a Hsin Mei hit-by-pitch would load the bases with two outs. Long Beach skipper Gabriel Rodríguez would pinch hit Mike Fowler, who would have an opportunity to win the game with a swing of the bat. He would not, waiving at a 2-2 Olson fastball and going down on strikes to end the game.

Next up for the 6-4 Stars is a four-game home stand against a hot 8-2 Portland squad.
