LONG BEACH – Seven scoreless innings from Valencia starter Greg Jackson set the tone for his team in its 6-3 victory in Friday night's rubber match against the Surfers. Left hander Jackson struck out five, allowed no runs, just four hits, and no walks in seven innings of work.
Jackson would leave the game with a 5-0 lead, helped in part by a solo home run and RBI double from outfielder Gene Meade. Another solo home run in the eighth, this time by Fernando Archuleta, would make it 6-0.
Having seen enough of Rea, coach Mel Jenkins would call on closer John Olson. A Francisco Otero single would score Martínez from third and a Hsin Mei hit-by-pitch would load the bases with two outs. Long Beach skipper Gabriel Rodríguez would pinch hit Mike Fowler, who would have an opportunity to win the game with a swing of the bat. He would not, waiving at a 2-2 Olson fastball and going down on strikes to end the game.
Next up for the 6-4 Stars is a four-game home stand against a hot 8-2 Portland squad.
