It likely had not escaped the attention of the Stars front office that (first baseman?) David Noboru was sitting on 2,888 hits for his career when they signed him this past winter. At what we might estimate is his current rate of production, he needs about 480 more plate appearances to get to 3,000. He possibly might need more than that. Could he do it in one season? He wouldn't need to be any everyday player, but pretty darn close.

Noboru last had a positive WAR and triple-digit wRC+ in 2045, which was his comeback season. He'll be turning thirty-eight in June. Does he have a second comeback in him? Will Noboru's quest for 3,000 hits be the feelgood story line of the Valencia 2048 season, or will this all devolve into farce?

It's easy to see how this marriage works for both parties. Noboru is on a team likely willing to give him at-bats, and Valencia will be able to give its fans a reason to come out to the ballpark. Noboru is a living legend, after all, and 3,000 hits is a major milestone.

Watching Noboru this spring, however, was not a joyful experience. His numbers were not good, but maybe we should defer to the veteran who knows his business, and at this stage of his career, his game likely needs a good deal of fine tuning to get ready for the season ahead. This fine tuning often does not result in attractive stats, and much of it happens on backfields and in batting practice. And we should probably not assign much, if any, importance to spring stats.

So, if you squint and tilt your head just so, you can see how this could turn out wonderfully. It could, it really could. And yes, Noboru could be off the roster by the All-Star break, but that's not nearly as much fun to contemplate, is it?

Wasn't sure he would make the OD roster. Hope he gets 3,000 hits.
