Stone Staying a Star

VALENICA – With Rule 5 draft picks now being sent back to their original clubs at a swift pace, the Valencia Stars appear to be satisfied with their lone pick-up, Lee Stone. Valencia selected Stone, then with Jacksonville, with the ninth pick of the draft. Described as an indifferent defender in the field, Stone's value to a club comes entirely from his ability with a bat in his hands, and he projects as a designated hitter.
Spring training is often something of an extended tryout for Rule 5 draftees, and if that was the case with Stone, the Stars must surely be satisfied with his performance. He got off to a slow start, but picked up steam as spring progressed, going 16 for 58 with 4 home runs and finishing with an OPS of .967. Ironically, the only two Valencia hitters who topped him in OPS will be starting their 2048 seasons in AAA.
The twenty-three year old, right-handed hitter is for his part pleased with where he is. “With the Rule 5,” said Stone, “it's good news and bad news. The bad news is that your team didn't think enough of you to protect you, but the good news is that you go someplace else where you can make a difference straight away. No more waiting. This team wanted me and gave me a chance, and I took it, simple as that.”
Stars fans will get a chance to see Stone in action this week through next Tuesday as Valencia plays host to the Popes and the Storm.
