The Third Floor (48.02)

Post by mragland » Mon Aug 16, 2021 5:00 pm

11.12.2047, Unincorporated Los Angeles County

Grant took advantage of the holiday to move the rest of his things into his new office, again on the third floor. A signed photograph of Kevin Lee enjoys pride of place on the wall opposite his desk, and a game ball from 2028 (nothing special, just a foul ball off Sergio Ramos's bat) sits in a little bronze glove on his desk.

Valencia had rebuilt their office suites at the same time they put up a new stadium. Even someone fairly far down the totem pole of analysts got their own (small) office. Sitting behind his desk, Grant shifts his attention between three monitors (spreadsheets, graphs, and a loop of video of Ken Arroyo pitching in a game against Yellow Springs the previous season).

Alden sticks his head in, knocking on the door frame at the same time. “Hiya. You have plans for lunch?”

Grant tilts head, looking around one of the monitors. “No. No plans. When did you get in? I thought the internationals were still waiting on visa paperwork.”

“Dad was an American. U.S. passport was the only thing he gave me. Finally came in handy.”

“Did I know that?” Grant asks, a little puzzled.

“I don't think I mentioned it before. Rarely speak of him. Anyway, I was thinking tacos.”

“Sure, sounds good. Grab a seat if you've got time.” Grant waives at one of the chairs in front of his desk.

Alden takes a chair. “My schedule's clear. We had an accounting meeting with the big boss earlier this morning.”

“How'd that go?” asks Grant.

Alden blows out his cheeks. “There are some challenges. In the past six seasons, the team has lost a little over thirty-eight million dollars. Peebo is determined that we'll live within our means, so payroll is going to be a fraction of what it was, which was nowhere near the cap. And a third of that figure is going to one player.”

Grant raises his eyebrows. “Sounds grim.”

“It does sound dire at first blush, but the prior regime got the ball rolling in a positive direction for revenue growth, and we've got a decent cash reserve, though most of that is earmarked for capital improvements.”

“Like the grandstand expansion?”

“Like the grandstand expansion,” says Alden with a nod.

“So the summary is, 'not great, but getting better'?”

“That's it. Peebo's revenue goals are,” Alden sighs, “ambitious.”

Grant nods.

“But what about you?” asks Alden. “What have you been up to? How's it look on the personnel side?”

“Yeah,” says Grant, “about that...”
