Current BBA Third Baseman
Jorge Garcia is the only true third baseman currently on the Valencia roster with utility man Sumiteru Okubo being his backup.
Jorge is your all around average third baseman. Average glove, average contact, average bat, etc. Jorge does have an above average arm from the hot corner. Over the last season and a half Jorge has averaged .295/.340 averaging about 10 homers and 2.3 WAR each year. Jorge is not the type of guy that will be playing in an all star game but having a $500K salary this year and an estimated arbitration salary of $1.6M next year makes him viable enough for the Valencia front office to spend its money elsewhere the next season or two.
Meanwhile Okubo has similar average ratings about everywhere you look. He had a decent 2063 season for a backup hitting .254/.297 with a 0.4 WAR on a $500K salary but has struggled mightily in 2064 seeing his average drop to .122. With an estimated $1.4 arbitration looming this off-season this season will likely be his last in Valencia.
Top 5 Farm System Third Basemen
The cupboard is pretty bare at third base on the farm as well. The front office may be looking at grabbing someone from the shortstop list if these players do not progress.
Gabriel Ortiz has followed a successful 2063 with the rookie club by falling off a cliff the first few weeks of this rookie level season. Gabe hit .318/.415 last year but has only hit .170/.235 in his 47 at bats in 2064. With a potential contact rating of 8 and a potential eye rating of 6, the front office is hoping this is just an early season slump and not a scouting discovery decline. Gabe has an average glove at third base.
Vasan Reshma is another scouting discovery player that also had a good 2063 season hitting .303/.419. Unlike Gabriel, Vasan has picked up where he left off as he is hitting .409/.519 so far this season. Vasan is a liability with the glove at this point.
Adrian Martinez is a former 12th round pick and is the best defensive player of the group. He is hitting .365/.433 so far this season with the Class A Redwood City team. Adrian is in desperate need of a talent bump if he is to make it to AAA or the BBA.
Jim Doane has been selected in the 13th round of this past draft. Jim is hitting .545/.667 so far this young season with the rookie league club.
