This edition of the Prospect Spotlight is focusing on 17 year-old left fielder Vern Tinnin. A sixth round pick in this year’s draft, Vern took a flight from his hometown in Detroit, Michigan to Russelville to begin playing for the Rockets.
Straight out of high school, Vern started 15 games and appeared in 25 as he hit for a .381 average in 63 at bats. Vern also was issued 11 free passes giving him an on-base percentage of .487 while adding on 5 home runs.
Vern spent the vast majority of his time at the DH position playing only 1 inning out in left field. He has a range of 4 and an arm rated at 3 so he will need to improve on those numbers if he is to see any significant playing time in the field.
For the 2064 season, it is a toss up whether he will remain in Russelville or be promoted to the S.A. club in Saturn. Vern has a potential overall rating of 45 with a 7/5/5 set of Contact/Power/Eye ratings but has yet to fill them out at 4/2/2. Vern has the makings of a solid AAA bat but is in need of some development bumps over time to have much of a chance in the BBA.
