Galaxy Gas 2061.42 - Diamond in the Rough?
As the overseas scout for Valencia, Angelos Chronis, stepped onto the boat to head over from Greece to the small town of Nea Moudania and its 10,000 inhabitants, he started looking at the papers in his folder. The tab at the top of his folder was labeled Christos Samios. He was a 16 year-old first baseman weighing in at 190 pounds and standing 6 foot 1 inch tall. He had a left handed glove and hit from the left side of the plate. He looked up and saw teenagers on jet skis running around in the water that flowed up to the beach not too far from the port where he would be docking.
Once off the boat, Angelos made his way through town to a makeshift ball diamond squeezed in between a few buildings. One of the buildings beyond right field had baseball-sized dents scattered along the wall. As he looked over at first base there was a player taking some grounders. It was Christos. Angelos quickly noticed the Christos had quick feet and anticipated the ball coming off of the bat – probably good enough for a range rating of 7 out of 10. His glovework seemed to be about average but he tended to take his eye off the ball from time to time. Angelos put down a 4 for defense and a 4 for the error rating.
As Christos stepped up to the plate to take some swings he had a fairly smooth stroke but needed some fine tuning. He had a good eye for the plate but still needed some more patience earlier in the count. As Christos took about his 5th swing, Angelos heard a crack of the bat followed by a pop on the wall of the building in right field about 3 seconds later. This was repeated in the next 4 swings. “The kid definitely has some pop,” Angelos muttered to himself.
Afterwards, Angelos met with Christos and his parents and they agreed to join the Valencia organization.
Fast forward three years and Christos is now 19 years old, he grew two more inches and added another 10 pounds. After having a rough start halfway through the 2060 season with the rookie club, he rebounded to have a .256 average with 5 homers in 82 at bats. So far in 2061, he his hitting a miniscule .113 in 71 at bats. His potential ratings have improved from 45 to 80, but his current overall rating has stayed at 20.
His ratings/current scouting sheet is shown below, but his numbers so far are not backing it up. The Valencia front office and others following the stars will be keeping an eye on this one to see if he develops or if he shatters.
