Arroyo, Yan Pace Stars to Opening Day Win

VALENICA – With attendance at 39,801, it wasn't quite a sell out crowd, but it was happy crowd of Stars fans who saw their team come out on top of the favored Popes Wednesday night.

This was a Valencia lineup that featured 7 hitters who would make their Stars debut, and one, Lee Stone, who would be making his major league debut.

The Stars took an early lead in the first after a Lee Stone sacrifice fly off Popes starter Matt McCartney scored Jesús Yan from third. McCartney would settle in after the first and thereafter keep the Stars off the board until the fifth inning, when Jorge Rincón scored on a triple by Jesús Yan, who would in turn be brought in by a Kenan Reis double, and Reis would himself be knocked in on a David Noboru double.

For his part, Ken Arroyo, last year's third place finisher for the Frick Gillstrom, was brilliant. He cruised through the first five scoreless innings, giving up one run in sixth, a solo homer by Ricardo Mendoza. He would pitch seven and a third innings in all, striking out ten, giving up one walk and five hits.

Right fielder Fernando Archuleta, brought to Valencia more for his glove than his bat, piled on in the sixth with a solo homer to make the score 5-1 in favor of the home team.

Skipper Mel Jenkins, making a managing debut of his own, handed things over to reliever Jorge Martinez in the eighth. Martinez would put the game to bed over the next one and two-thirds, allowing no runs in relief.

Nashville should have an advantage seeing they are already used to losing to Valencia. Other teams be warned.

If Valencia is gonna be a contender this season then the fight for the Pacific is going to be even wilder than I thought.

I figure this team's best chance is to see the division turn into knife fight in a phone booth, then it's basically a toss-up for a wild-card. If we were better constructed to take on Sacramento head to head I'd be more confident we could do it. When Arroyo's not on the mound, we're in trouble.

I think this is the year all the wildcards come out of the Heartland. Hawaii is losing a step and they usually sneak in at the end. Nashville and Madison both have strong teams that should compete for that last spot.

There's a league feature there. This last happened in '45, and has happened far too often. Will the fifth place Heartland team in '48 have a better record than the second place Pacific team? Last year Heartland teams won 686 games to the Pacific teams' 610.

I'm not sure about this season. I don't really have a feel for the disparity between the two, but I feel like some teams who have been down in the Pacific lately will be better, and that those interdivisional wins might consequently be harder to come by for Heartland teams. It's on the teams in the Pacific to make those Heartland west coast road trips less like a mini vacation

I will say this, though, the Heartland doesn't appear to lack for self-regard.
