Hawai'i nudges its record to 78-61, stays in 1st
Hawai'i won its 78th game of the season, 14-0, behind a 12-hit attack led
by SS Benton Bobke's cycle, Dwayne Johnson's 29th home run, and the
seven-hit shut out pitching of Johnny Carter. Felicetti walked four times to
tie the Tropics single-game record.
Carter (10-10, 3.78) pitched out of trouble early in the game, including
striking out two in the 1st with the bases loaded and inducing an inning-
ending double play with two on in the 3rd and sailed to his first shut out of
the season.
3b Johnson and Bobke both hit home runs off of Gambler starter Rivera in
the 3rd inning, the first of five straight innings in which the Tropics scored.
Bobke doubled with one out in the 5th and hit a 2-run triple in the 6th, scoring
Halime and Reyes, who had both walked. In the 7th Bobke singled in Reyes
to complete the cycle, getting three of the four necessary hits in consecutive
innings.
Cf Stanley had two hits and three rbis.
Bobke (.231-17-65), who is starting against left-handers, helped Hawai'i to its
second straight defeat of a southpaw.
Atlantic City pitchers allowed 13 walks and 12 hits.
Hawai'i opens a two-game series at Carolina tomorrow with Carl "Daffy" MacNeill
scheduled to start against the organization that drafted him 2nd overall in 2003.
