The Trops manage just three hits in the season opener in Sacramento as the Mad Popes shut out Hawaii. Hawaii hitters Jorge Dodd, Atsushi Gato and Bob Webb each singled in the loss.

Buwono Mainaky was tabbed to be the Trops opening day starter and struggled out of the gate allowing four runs on six hits in 5.1 innings. He walked three and struck out three as he falls to 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA. Alex Garcia and Ricardo Sanchez each made scoreless appearances for the Trops.

Trops starter Nalany Ahotaein gave up five runs on seven hits in five innings while walking two and striking out one. He falls to 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA. Cale Cote pitched a clean inning in his 1st appearance of the season but Bob Westbrooks and Gheorghe Sollomovici were less than effective in theirs.

Eric Owens was 1 for 3 with a 5th inning solo homer (1). Vicente ‘Yogi’ Martinez was 2 for 4 with a triple (1) and an RBI. Bob Webb was 2 for 3 and scored two runs.

Here comes the 1st one-run loss of the season. The Mad Popes score single runs in the 1st, 3rd and 4th inning to take a lead, but Hawaii responds with two runs to inch closer. Sacramento starter Michihiro Tanaka and closer Claudio Torres were stingy the rest of the way to seure the series sweep.

Leland Rogers pitched 4.1 innings allowing three runs on seven hits, walked two and fanned six but took the loss. The Trops bullpen allowed just a hit in the final 3.2 innings to keep the game close for the offense.

Eric Owens was 1 for 2 with two walks and a ribbie. Arata Ine has been forced to play full time at second after Miguel ‘Thrillseeker’ Martinez went down with an injury and he was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The Sacramento Mad Popes sweep the Hawaii Tropics in the three-games series.
