Hawaii begins the inter-divisional play with a 10-run offensive barrage to take Game 1 of the series with Des Moines. Left fielder Roberto Lopez went 4 for 5 with a triple (1), two RBI and scored two runs. He also stole a base (6) and was caught stealing (2). Jorge Dodd was 2 for 4 with a couple of RBI but committed an error at third that led to two unearned runs.
On the mound, Trops rookie starter Hector Estrada won his 3rd game of the season after allowing four runs on six hits and a couple of walks in 5.1 innings of work. He struck out three batters but also gave up three homers in the process. Ray Harrison threw 24 pitches in 1.2 innings of relief and gave up a hit while fanning three batters for a hold (1). Cale Cote was the victim of the Dodd error and had two unearned runs in his ledger in 2/3 of an inning. Utkan Gocek picked up his 3rd save as he retired the last two batters of the game.

The Kernels evened the series after surviving a 1st inning outburst by the Tropics. Des Moines put up two in the top of the inning, but Hawaii responded with four to take a two-run lead. But the Kernels Jose Barron and the bullpen took control of the game and shutout the Trops offense the rest of the way.
Hawaii starter Semih Gurani couldn’t hold the lead that his offense gave him giving up four runs on six hits in four innings. He struck out one and gave up three homers like Game 1 starter Hector Estrada. Reliever Alex Garcia surrendered the lead allowing two runs in 1.1 innings and was tagged with his 1st loss of the season.
Arata Ine was 1 for 4 with two RBI and scored a run. Harry Surface was 3 for 5 and scored a run. Vincente Mendez was 2 for 2 with an RBI before leaving the game with a mild ab strain. Mendez has suffered from ab strains throughout his career in the BBA.

Hawaii 2B Miguel ‘Thrillseeker’ Martinez crushed two homers (8) and doubled in four at bats to lead his team to a win. Martinez’s 1st homer of the game was of the solo variety in the 6th inning, and the 2nd was a two-run moon shot in the 7th. He had some help from DH Harry Surface who was 2 for 4 with two RBI and scored two runs.
Johnny Nicholson made the start for Hawaii allowing a couple of runs on four hits with five Ks in 4.2 innings. Ray Harrison picked up his 2nd win with a scoreless inning issuing a walk and striking out two. Utkan Gocek secure dhis 2nd save of the series but rode that fine line of success and failure. He gave up two runs on two hits and a walk but fanned three.

Des Moines starter Alonso ‘Sandman’ Amaya put the Tropics offense in a sleeper hold, and the Kernel offense score 9 runs on 12 hit to earn a series split with Hawaii. The ‘Sandman’ allowed Hawaii just a run on a solo homer in the 9th by Vicente ‘Yogi’ Martinez. He allowed a total of six hits on the day as he improves to 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA.
Hawaii starter Nalany Ahotaein gave up seven runs in three innings with six of those runs coming in the 2nd inning. He gave up a total of eight hits, walked one and struck out two as he falls to 1-5 with a 5.32 ERA. Alex Garcia was the lone pitcher for Hawaii to have any success as he gave up just two hits with a K in 1.2 innings of relief.
The Tropics and Kernels split the four-game series.
We played even with a very good team and our offense showed some signs of life.
