In April 2006 the Hawaii Tropics banged 50 home runs. 50. An MBBA-leading
number. And they did this with team-leader Wave Johnson sitting out
a week.
Hoot recollects his first season as GM (2002) when the team hit 9 home runs
in April--his inaugural month as an MBwBA general manager.
Leading the way for the Hawaiians has been Johnson, who swatted 9 in 19
games before sitting out with an injured back. The mark put Johnson at the
lead in home runs for the league and gave him a .760 SLG%.
It also equaled the team's April output of 2004.
Liao Kuan, lost for most of last season, hit 8 this April.
Felix Mendoza, a Rule 5 pick three seasons ago (and the reason the Tropics
returned another first base Rule 5 pick Jason Vanega to LV) has finally matured
and has 6 dingers in April.
Hurley Reyes, no doubt feeling at ease not to have to carry the offense himself,
has also contributed 6 homers; as has newcomer, Rf Pat Clark.
Jeff Mueller has hit 5 in 61 at bats; and another newcomer, The Bob (Benton Bobke),
has hit 4.
Pat Sims, am annual over-achiever, has 3 dingers in 57 at bats.
Joe Sullivan, Igancio Ramos, and Resurrection Santos have each hit 1.
Eight Tropic players have scored 12 or more runs.
In Al Hoot's fifth season as GM, he has tried to stitch together a team that
will finish "about .500." Which second-year CEO Charlie Hough has indicated
is his preference.
"Don't wanna upset the bossman," said team spokesperson Stitch Lilo.
