The Trops score a run in the 8th and one in the 9th to pull away from the Lumberjacks to begin this pivotal series. Carlos Sanchez hit his 18th homer in the 8th inning to push the lead to 6-4. The Lumberjacks added a run in the bottom of the 8th to get close but Vicente ‘Yogi’ Martinez had an RBI double (48) to give his team that two-run cushion.
Eric Owens is beginning to look like his old self going 1 for 4 with a three-run double (16) in the 3rd inning. He’s been grinding all season and has raise his average to .237 with 15 homers and 66 RBI. It’s still a far cry from his 2062 season.
Gheorghe Sollomovici began the game with 3.2 innings and gave up three runs on five hits, walked two and fanned five batters. Mr. Reliable Valle earned his 9th win of the season with 1.2 innings of work. Reynaldo Trinidad pitched 1.1 clean innings for his 1st save.

The Tropics and Lumberjacks had a pitcher’s duel at The Trail in Multnomah, but Hawaii eked out the one-run win. Trops starter Martin ‘Lumps’ Garcia gave up one run on 4.2 innings on three hits, walked two and fanned six in a no decision. Alex Gacria picked up his 13th win in relief with 1.2 scoreless innings. He scattered three hits and struck out a batter. Cale Cote earned the save (4) with a scoreless inning.
At the plate, Roberto Lopez drove in both Tropics runs going 1 for 2 with a walk but was caught stealing for the 4th time this season. Julian Rivera was 1 for 2 with a double (23) and scored a run.

The Trops and Jacks engage in another pitching duel, but this time Portland comes out on top. Victor King gave up just one run in 5.2 innings to Hawaii then his bullpen allowed just one hit to the Trops the rest of the way.
Majid al Din fell to 4-6 for Hawaii allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk. He struck out five batters in 3.1 innings. Rookie Virgil Guffin pitched 1.1 clean innings with a K and has yet to give up a run.

Hawaii RF Vincente Mendez broke the heart of all Portland fans with a three-run homer (14) off Bernie Stuart in the 8th inning to steal the series from the Jacks. Hawaii trailed the Lumberjacks 2-0 when Roberto Lopez singled in a run in the 5th inning.
Daniel Thornton didn’t put Hawaii too far behind allowing two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings then he yielded to Cale Cote with two outs in the 3rd. Cote pitched 1.1 innings with a walk and a K. Valle won his 10th against one loss in 2.1 innings with two Ks. Virgil Guffin pitched a clean inning for his 1st career save.
The Tropics win the four-game series 3-1.
The Trops are now 19-6 since losing three straight to the Bikini Krill and 11-4 in September. Hawaii now has a slim, one game lead in the Pacific Division and an easier path to the pennant than Portland and Bikini.
