Hawai'i rallies to sweep Washington, 7-6
McWash collects career save 399; Shellenbarger shelled
Wallace also bombed, but winning streak preserved
Starters:

Hawai'i:
Billy Wallace 11-11, 3.24, 7.81 H/9
Salary: $1.0 m
Age: 35

Washington:
Michael Shellenbarger 9-8, 3.59, 8.57 H/9
Salary: $8.6 m
Age: 36
Two top notch starters could not make it through 4 innings in game in which Hawai'i rallied
from 5-2 and 6-5 deficits to sweep Washington off the islands, 7-6, before the two teams
boarded the Tropics Concorde for the ~3-hour, 4800-mile flight to Washington, DC, where
the 6-game series continues tomorrow.
Billy Wallace, the 6'3" Texan with an 89 mph slider, who defeated Madison 4-1 five days
ago to win his fifth start in a row, has been the unsung hero and most consistent starter
for the 2005 Tropics.
Wallace was shelled for 5 runs on 5 hits, including a two-out, two-run single by Shellenbarger
in the 4th before departing for John Daniels. Score: Washington 5, Hawai'i 2.
Michael Shellenburger, 6'5" from Illinois, who won an average of 15 games in 2001-2004
for California after the Tropics let him go for 4 players in a questionable 2000 trade, was
acquired by the Bobwhites for a run at the playoffs.
Hawai'i touched "Shelly" for three home runs in two innings before the former Crusaders
ace headed for the showers to the catcalls of 10,000 fans with the game tied at 5.
Resurrection Santos sent a 2-1 curveball 367 feet over the left-field wall, scoring lead off
hitter Al Hughes in the 3rd; and Jeff Mueller and Pat Sims each homered in the 4th to chase
Shellenbarger, who is now 2-1, 6.23 in 4 starts with Washington.
With the game tied at 5 after 4 innings, neither starter got a decision.
Daniels gave up a run on 3 hits in the 5th but five additional Tropics relievers held the
Bobwhites offense in check and Hawai'i rallied for two in the 7th to win 7-6. McKinley
Washington recorded his 29th save, the 399th of his career.
The winning run scored on a passed ball and the penultimate run on a sac fly.
