Ron, er Roy Paul
Roy Paul won his 8th game and handed ex-Tropic Oscar Funke his 12th loss as Hawai'i
won the second of three in a row over the Bobwhites at O'ahu. Paul scattered 4 hits
over 8 innings and Private Ernie Powell, making his second tour of duty in the islands,
picked up the save.
Hawai'i jumped to a 3-0 lead when Al Hughes opened the first with a walk, stole 3rd base,
and scored on a double by Liao Kuan. Reyes doubled in Liao. Jeff Mueller singled and one
batter later Reyes scored on a fielder's choice. Pat Sims then singled and rookie Máximo
Hernández, who had hit .346 at Triple-A Death Valley, reached on an error by Squeamish
MacKeamish before Funke K'd Paul with the bases full to end the inning.
In the 2nd, Prince Valiant made it 3-2 when he blasted a 2-2 pitch 432 feet for his 11th
home run. MacKeamish and McCall struck out and Funke grounded out to end the inning.
Resurrection Santos doubled in Hughes in the 4th and singled him in in the 8th. In the 7th,
Reyes scored in a wild pitch by reliever Jerome Powell.
In the 4th Robert Webb—pinch-hitting for Funke in his 1st ML at bat—hit a two-out single,
stole the 1st base of his career, and was singled in by Mike Clarke. Hughes nailed Clarke at
2nd to end the inning.
Hughes, Santos, Reyes, Mueller, and Sims each had two hits, as Hawai'i collected 12 hits to
the Bobwhites' 5. Hughes stole his 41st and 42nd bases.
Private Ernie Powell retired the side in the 9th FTW, er, save. Powell has a 1.00 ERA in 18
innings for the Tropics after sporting a 7.84 ERA in 20.6 innings with the Crawdads. Powell
pitched in 89 games for Hawai'i in 2002-03. He was a waiver-claim in June.
Game 3 is at O'ahu tomorrow, and then the teams fly on Hawaii's Concorde to Washington,
DC for three games.
