The Tropics return home for a three-game series against the Bikini Krill at ‘Iolani Palace.
Game 1- The Tropics put together a nice game at the plate and on the mound to beat the Krill in the series opener. Four Hawaii pitchers combined to allow a run on six hits while Trops hitters pounded out 15 hits and scored 8 runs.
Utbah ‘Crawdad Me’ bin Muta made the start for Hawaii throwing 46 pitches in 2.2 innings. He gave up just a hit, issued a walk and struck out a batter. Bill Williams earned the win with two innings of work. He allowed the Krill’s only run on four hits with a K. He improves to 2-3 with a 4.83 ERA. Manny Ortiz was solid in 2.1 hitless innings. He struck out three of the seven batters he faced. Luis Perez finished the game with two scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and fanned a batter.
2B Adhyapayana Mehta led Hawaii hitters with three hits in four at bats. He doubled (9) and hit a three-run homer (3). He walked, scored a run, and drove in four runs. CF Angelo Lucchesi was 2 for 4 with a double (6) and scored two runs. LF Bob Chastain was 3 for 4 with a triple (2), scored a run and had two RBI. 3B Mitch Wareham was 1 for 3 with a solo homer (3), a walk and scored two runs.
Hawaii wins 8-1.
Game 2- The Tropics fell back into old habits as pitching and bad defense helped the Krill overcome a two-run deficit. Starter Gerardo Rea allowed a three runs, two earned, in six innings. Those runs came on five hits and two walks while he fanned two batters. Bill Phillips took the loss allowing the go ahead run on three hits and a walk in 1.2 innings. Phillips falls to 2-3 with a 3.34 ERA. Chih Kuang gave up an insurance run to Bikini with a solo homer in 1.1 innings of relief.
Mehta was 2 for 4 with two singles, stole two bases (15) and scored two runs. Wareham was 1 for 5 and scored a run. Lucchesi was 1 for 4 with an RBI. 1B Karunamaya Makarand was 1 for 4 with an RBI. RF Carlos Sanchez was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Bikini wins 5-3.
Game 3- The Tropics 9th inning comeback attempt falls a run short as the Krill win the rubber match to win the series. SS Thomas Kramer drove a run in the bottom of the 9th but was thrown out at third breaking a baseball rule. Kramer made the last out at third after trying to take third on Mehta’s RBI single that scored Makarand.
After the game Kramer said, “That was all on me. I ran right through the stop sign and should have thought twice about that. It cost us as a team.”
Hawaii starter Elvin Hilliard battled through a rough 1st inning that saw him give up two runs, He settled in and finished with 6.1 innings pitched allowing three runs on four hits, walked three and struck out four. He took the loss and falls to 4-4 with a 3.95 ERA. Juan Martinez pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and gave up just a hit.
Bikini wins 4-3.
The Krill wins the series 2-1.
