The Tropics take a day off at home before beginning a four-game series with the Yellow Springs Nine at ‘Iolani Palace.

Game 1- The Yellow Springs Nine use three pitchers to shut out the Trops on seven hits and take the series opener in Hawaii. Tropics starter Elvin Hilliard wasn’t good enough as he allowed three runs on two hits and a walk in 6.2 innings. He struck out six batters as he falls to 3-3 with a 4.01 ERA. Bill Phillips pitched well in his two innings as he allowed two hits with a K.

Hawaii RF Carlos Sanchez and SS Thomas Kramer each were 2 for 4. Kramer doubled twice and Sanchez also had a double.



Yellow Springs wins 4-0.

Game 2- The Tropics scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game at 2-2 but the Nine scored three runs off Hawaii reliever Luis Perez. Perez gave up the runs on a single, an intentional walk and a three-run homer. Perez falls to 0-3 with a 6.38 ERA.

Semih Gurani made the start for Hawaii and threw 53 pitches in 4.1 innings. He allowed a run on three hits with two Ks. Manny Ortiz followed with 1.2 innings allowing a run on three hits while fanning three batters. Utkan Gocek was nasty against the Nine hitters as he threw two scoreless innings with two Ks.

At the plate, 3B Mitch Wareham was 2 for 4 with a double (8), scored a run and drove in one. 1B Tomas Borges was 1 for 3 with a double (6) and an RBI. LF Bob Chastain was 2 for 3 with a double (8) and scored a run.



Yellow Springs wins 5-2.

Game 3- The Hawaii Tropics finally break through against the Nine with a walk-off solo homer by pinch hitter Karunamaya Makarand. Makarand was down in the count 1-2 but crushed a slider 432 feet to the upper deck in right at 108+ mph. His teammates met him at the plate with an ice water bucket.

CF Angelo Lucchesi tripled (3) in the 2nd inning that scored Bob Chastain with Hawaii’s other run. Lucchesi was 1 for 3 while Chastain was 2 for 4 with a double (9).

Hawaii used three pitchers to hold the Nine to a run on six hits. John Moore began the game with four scoreless innings for Hawaii and set the tone. He allowed four hits while fanning four batters. Chih Kuang then pitched 3.1 scoreless innings allowing just a hit with three Ks. Juan Martinez stumbled in is turn allowing a solo homer that tied the game but kept at it to get the win. He allowed the run in 1.2 innings of work. He struck out one batter as he improves to 2-2 with a 5.23 ERA.



Hawaii wins 2-1.

Game 4- Hawaii get another great combined pitching performance as the Trops shutout the Nine and earn the series split. Bill Williams started the game giving up just a hit in 1.2 innings. He walked two batters and struck out two. Utbah ‘Crawdad Me’ bin Muta showed what he could do with 3.2 scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out one. Troy ‘Teddy Bear’ Reynolds earned the win with 2.2 hitless, scoreless innings. He improves to 2-2 with a 1.20 ERA. Luis Perez kept the Trops ahead with a scoreless inning. He allowed two hits with two Ks to earn his 5th save.

Bob Chastain was 1 for 4 with two RBI. C Katsumi Matsumoto was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Carlos Sanchez was 1 for 2 with a double (13), two walks and scored two runs. Tomas Borges was 1 for 3 and scored a run.



Hawaii wins 3-0.



The Tropics and Nine split the four-game series.
