The Tropics make the short trip from Sacramento to Portland for a two-game series against the Lumberjacks.
Game 1- The Lumberjacks score six runs in the 1st inning off Hawaii starter Bill Williams to run away with the series opener. Williams gave up two homer and seven total hits while retiring just one batter before being removed from the game. He took the loss as he falls to 1-3 with a 5.47 ERA. Chih Kuang gave his teammates a breather as he gave up just a hit in 1.1 innings with a walk and two Ks. That was short lived as Utbah ‘Crawdad Me’ bin Muta gave up five runs on four hits with a K in an inning of work.
The Hawaii offense did put some runs up with single runs in the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th innings. The Trops had 15 hits and drew 2 walks while striking out just three times. Rookie Felipe Hernandez was 1 for 4 with two RBI. LF Bob Chastain was 3 for 5 with a double (6) and an RBI. C Frank McMillan is earning his early extension this season. He was 2 for 3 with a walk, scored two runs and drove in one.
Portland wins 13-5.
Game 2- Hawaii’s offense gets just two extra base hits but score ten runs on fifteen hits and earn a series split. Rookie DH Felipe Hernandez has been on fire for the last six games. He was 2 for 5 with three RBI. 2B Adhyapayana Mehta was 1 for 5 with two RBI and scored a run. CF Angelo Lucchesi was 1 for 4 with a double (5), scored a run and drove in two runs. LF Bob Chastain was 1 for 3 with a walk, a double (7), scored two runs and drove in a run. C Katsumi Matsumoto was 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run.
Hawaii starter Gerardo Rea pitched just 4.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with six Ks in a no decision. ‘Crawdad Me’ Muta earned the win with an inning of work. He gave up a run on three hits with a K. Muta improves to 1-3 with a 7.57 ERA. Bill Phillips also gave up a run on two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings of relief. Juan Martinez was solid with 1.2 scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and struck out a batter.
Hawaii wins 10-5.
The Trops and ‘Jacks splits the two-game series.
GM Jim Walker said, “We’re gonna have to shuffle the lineup and bullpen to try and get some life in this team.”
