The Tropics return home from Chicago for a five-game homestand. They begin with a three-game series against the Portland Lumberjacks.

Game 1- Hawaii starter Gerardo Rea had another lackluster start as he gave up six runs on four hits and four walks. He pitched just 2.2 innings with two Ks but falls to 0-6 with a 6.63 ERA. Manny Ortiz stopped the axe job with three hitless, scoreless innings while striking out two batters. Troy ‘Teddy Bear’ Reynolds has taken to life out of the ‘pen with 2.2 innings. He allowed a run on four hits with two Ks.

The Hawaii offense couldn’t maintain any momentum to mount a comeback. Tomas Borges was 2 for 4 with a solo homer in the 8th inning and stole a base. LF Vicente Mendez was 2 for 4 with two ribbies and stole a base.



Portland wins 7-3.

Game 2- The Hawaii Tropics even the series after RF Carlos Sanchez hits two homers and drove in four runs to lead the Trops to the win. Sanchez was 3 for 4 with a walk, a two-run homer in the 1st inning and another two-run homer in the 3rd inning. 3B Mitch Wareham was 2 for 4 batting in front of Sanchez and scored two runs. Tomas Borges assisted with a solo homer in the 6th inning.

SP Elvin Hilliard battled through 5.2 innings allowing three runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out seven batters as he improves to 3-2 with a 4.37 ERA. Reliever Bill Phillips pitched 2.1 scoreless innings allowing two hits with three Ks. Luis Perez finished the game with a scoreless inning with a couple of walks and a K.



Hawaii wins 7-3.

Game 3- The Lumberjacks score two runs in the 7th inning earn the win in a pitchers’ duel at ‘Iolani Palace. The Trops were held to a run on six hits and a couple of walks while they struck out eight times. LF Shafiq Zahir was 1 for 4 with a RBI double that drove in Tomas Borges with Hawaii’s lone run.

Hawaii hybrid starter Semih Gurani was efficient in five innings. He threw just 52 pitches allowing just four hits and struck out three batters in the no decision. The Teddy Bear pitched a scoreless inning with some traffic on the bases as he gave up two hits and a walk. He wiggled out of the jam as he struck out the side to get out of it. Bill Williams lost the game for the Trops as he gave up the two runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out two in two innings of relief as he falls to 1-2 with a 3.46 ERA. Juan Martinez pitched well after a string of horrible appearances. He pitched a clean 9th with a K.



Portland wins 2-1.



The Lumberjacks win the series 2-1.



“We are too inconsistent. It looks like a trend in the league though.”, commented Hawaii GM Jim Walker.
