The Tropics play a three-game series against the Sacramento Mad Popes in a Pacific Division battle.



Game 1- The Tropics and Mad Popes play eight scoreless inning before Sacramento takes the lead on a Yogi Isam RBI double off Hawaii reliever Phil Thompson. With their back against a wall the Tropics rally in the bottom of the 9th. After a Mehta ground out, Adam Backhouse hit a solo homer to left and tied the game. Mike Campbell grounded out to second for the second out of the inning. Shafiq Zahir drew a walk and took second on a wild pitch. Angelo Lucchesi was thrown three straight balls before taking a strike. The next pitch he saw was line to the gap in right center to score Zahir with the winning run. Backhouse was 1 for 4 with a solo bomb and Lucchesi was 1 for 4 with a double and a ribbie.

Austin George was masterful as he pitched to contact giving up just two hits and walked two batters in seven innings. He struck out one in a no decision. Phil Thompson earned the win as he thew two innings of relief allowing a run on two hits with a K. He improves to 2-1 with a 1.29 ERA.



Hawaii wins 2-1.



Game 2- The Tropics offense has 7 of their 11 hits for extras bases and the pitching staff allows just one unearned run as Hawaii takes a 2-0 series lead. Mitch Wareham thrives as the leadoff hitter. He was 2 for 4 with a double and a solo homer. Mehta was 2 for 4, scored a run and stole a base. Adam Backhouse was 2 for 4 with a double and scored a run. Zahir was 2 for 4 with an RBI double and a three-run homer in the 1st inning. Lucchesi was 2 for 3 with a double and scored a run. Thomas Kramer was 1 for 4 with a two-run homer.

Terry Hansen threw 6 2/3 shutout innings giving up seven hits and issued a walk. He fanned three and improves to 4-3 with a 3.14 ERA. Utkan Gocek allowed an unearned run after an error by Lucchesi allowed a runner to score. He pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits, a walk and struck out three. Chih Kuang pitched a clean 9th with a K to end the game.



Hawaii wins 7-1.



Game 3- The Mad Popes take a 2-0 lead but Hawaii scores three runs in the 7th to flip the score. The Popes scored a run in the top of the 8th to tie it up but only briefly. Hawaii’s offense scored three more runs in the bottom of the 8th to re-take the lead.

Tommy Kramer was 1 for 3 with a three-run homer in the 7th to give Hawaii their first lead. Shafiq Zahir had a pinch-hit solo homer in the bottom of the 8th to put Hawaii back up 4-3 before Backhouse doubled and Pedro Huerta hit a two-run homer. Backhouse was 1 for 4 and Huerta was 2 for 4 against Mad Popes pitching. Lucchesi was 3 for 4 and scored a run. Wareham was 1 for 2 with a double and scored a run.

Troy ‘Teddy Bear’ Reynolds continues pitching well as he threw 5 1/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out two batters in the no decision. Angel Hernandez pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball with a K.

Pitching Coach Tony Torres said, “We are using Hernandez differently after his recent struggles. He gets more time between appearances, and it seems to work so far.”

Bill Ritz was a bit wild against the Mad Popes as he issued three walks and gave up an unearned run. He struck out two batters before leaving the game after 32 pitches. Phil Thompson earned his 2nd win of the series with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He gave up a hit and struck out a batter as he improves to 3-1 with a 1.24 ERA.



Hawaii wins 6-3.



The Tropics sweep the three-game series.



GM Jim Walker said, “Sacramento makes you throw a bunch of pitches. They draw a lot of walks and don’t strike out. You need a good defense with the ball in play.”
