The Tropics return home for a twelve-game home stand and begin with a three-game series against the Long Beach Surfers.

Game 1- The Surfers and right fielder Fernando Castillo hammer the Tropics to win the series opener. Castillo pummeled Hawaii pitching as he blasted two, three-run homers to lead Long Beach to the win.

Hawaii started Austin George gave up seven runs on eight hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five batters as he falls to 1-2 with a 4.97 ERA. Juan Martinez didn’t fare much better allowing two runs on a couple of hits, a walk and struck out two batters in an inning. Jesus Rios was just a tiny bit better as he allowed two runs on three hits with a K in 1 2/3 of an inning. Juan Cerda stopped the bleeding with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. He gave up a hit and fanned two.

Lead off hitter Adhyapayana Mehta was 2 for 5 with a double. He scored a run, drove in a run and was caught stealing. Adam Backhouse was 1 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI. Will Patterson was 2 for 3 with a solo homer in the 7th inning.

Long Beach wins 11-5.

Game 2- Hawaii starter Terry Hansen continues to pitch well as he held the Surfers to a run on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked no one as he improves to 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA. Utkan Gocek has taken to the relief role in his first full season in the majors. He pitched two innings and gave up his first run this season on two hits and a walk. He struck out a batter and earned his 3rd hold. Dominic Thompson earned the easy save by recording the last out with a K.

Ramao ‘Massacre’ Saturnino was 2 for 3 with a walk and scored two runs. Adam Backhouse was 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in the 7th inning. Pedro Huerta was 1 for 4 with a double and two ribbies. Frank McMillan was 1 for 4 with a solo homer in the 4th inning.

Hawaii wins 5-2.

Game 3- Tropics catcher Frank McMillan was 2 for 4 and hit a walk-off two-run homer to give the boys a series win. McMillan said, “Rodriguez threw me a first pitch fastball. Too easy.”

McMillan’s heroics were setup by a single by Pedro Huerta and a fielder’s choice by Mike Campbell. Campbell hustled down the line and beat out the throw to avoid the double play.

Troy ‘Teddy Bear’ Reynolds did a nice job against the Surfers allowing a run on three hits and a walk. He struck out two batters in a no decision. Reynolds said, “I just have to keep us close and let this offense do their thing.”

Phil Thompson came on in relief and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and fanned four batters. The good Angel Hernandez showed up this time and threw two scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and struck out two to earn the win. He improves to 3-2 and lowers his horrendous ERA to 7.36.

Hawaii wins 2-1.

The Tropics win the series 2-1.

GM Jim Walker said, “Backhouse has been the difference. We are scoring almost a run more than last season and we are allowing half a run less. That’s a recipe for success. We just have to weather the slumps and ride enjoy the winning streaks to get through the long season.”
