The Hawaii Tropics begin the second half of the season with a 13 game road trip beginning with a four game series against the Long Beach Surfers.




Game 1- The Hawaii Tropics get some great pitching from SP Niccolo “Notorious” Destefani and RP Felipe Lopez. Destefani gave up just four hits in 7 1/3 innings of work while walking two and striking out four. He turned the game over to Lopez with an out in the eighth inning. Lopez retired all five hitters he faced and struck out three in the process. Destefani improves to 6-4 on the season with a 3.64 ERA. Lopez has been good this season in relief with a 3.34 ERA and 2 saves.

On offense, the Tropics were led by CF Manny Garcia. Garcia was 2 for 4 with a three run homer, a run and four RBI. He has hit .257 with 6 homer and 17 RBI. 1B Gary Allen was 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI.



Hawaii wins 5-0.



Game 2- The Hawaii offense explodes for 10 runs on 14 hits to bury the Surfers. All Tropics starters recorded at least one hit with CF Michel Noel leading the way with three.

The pitching also helped out with SP Jesus Gonzalez going 6 1/3 innings giving up three runs on seven hits. He walked three and punched out seven. P Ernie Poole came on in relief pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing a run on two hits with one K. RP Alberto Castaneda then came on to finish out the game with a clean ninth.

Noel was 3 for 5 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.

Gary Allen was 1 for 4 with a two run homer, two runs scored and three runs driven in.

SS Logan ‘LJ’ Niles was 2 for 4 with two runs, and RBI and a stolen base.

Hawaii wins 10-4.



Game 3- The Surfers turn the tables on the Tropics in this game scoring 10 runs on 15 hits and
Danya Tchekanov once again dominated Hawaii hitters going seven innings giving up just two runs on eight hits. He struck out eight and walked none as he improved to 8-4.

The pitching woes of Zak ‘Hitman’ Johnson continues for the Tropics. He gave up five runs on nine hits in five inning pitched. He walked no one and struck out five. He falls to 5-6 with a 6.70 ERA.

Gary Allen was 1 for 4 with a solo homer.

DH Ernest McBride was 2 for 4 with an RBI. McBride was asked what makes Tchekanov so tough on Hawaii’s hitters. He replied, “He takes advantage of our aggressiveness at the plate. He throws that 96 mph heater then he comes at you with that slide piece and change from the same slot. Then, when he starts getting gassed, he will throw that splitter at you. Everyone in the dugout hates facing him.”



Long Beach wins 10-2.



Game 4- The Tropics scored five run sin the fourth inning to take the lead then cruise to a win. The big hit in the fourth was a Grand Slam off the bat of LF Jose Camacho. Camacho was 1 for 3 with a walk to go with the slam and threw out a runner at home.

Rookie Denny Hamilton pitched 5 2/3 innings and surrendered three runs on six hits and three walks, He siding strikeout anyone but relied on his defense as the infield turned three double plays.

RP William Fuller came on in relief of Hamilton and gave up a run on four hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. He was followed by Felipe Lopez who pitched 2/3 of an inning to earn his 2nd save of the season.

RF Mike Campbell was 3 for 4 with a solo homer.

Logan Niles was 1 for 4 with a solo homer.



Hawaii wins 6-4.



The Tropics move on to Des Moines for a three game series against the Kernels at Edward Murphy Memorial Stadium.



Game 1- Hawaii SP Alaric Wullenweber strikes out 11 batters in 6 2/3 innings and Ernest McBride hits a Grand Slam as the Tropics take the opener in Des Moines.

Wullenweber gave up just a run on seven hits and walked none. He improved to 14-3 with a 3.11 ERA

McBride was 1 for 3 with a walk and the slam.



Hawaii wins 6-1.



Game 2- The Tropics jump out to a 5-0 lead then watched it erode to a 5-4 game late. William Fuller came on to get the final out to secure the win for Hawaii to avoid disaster.

Niccolo Destefani has shaken off last seasons woes as he pitched another gem. He allowed non runs on nine hits and struck out six batter in six innings. He improves to 7-4 with a 3.46 ERA.

McBride was 2 for 4 with a three run homer. McBride has 28 homers and 75 RBI.

Hawaii wins 5-4.



Game 3- Trailing the Kernels 5-2, the Tropic bomb the Kernels for six runs in the sixth, two in the eighth and two more in the ninth to sweep the series. The big hit in the sixth was another grand slam by Hawaii. This time off the bat of LF Bastiao Fardos. Fardos was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, four RBI and three stolen bases.

Manny Garcia was 2 for 5 with a double, a run, two RBI and a stolen base.

Logan Niles was 3 for 5 with a double and two runs scored.

2B Carlos Martinez was 1 for 5 with a two runs homer.

Jesus Gonzales has an up and down day allowing five runs on six hits and walking one. He struck out six in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Alberto Castaneda pitched an inning striking out one batter and earned the win. He improves to 2-0 with a 4.88 ERA.

Ernie Poole was strong in relief going 2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.



Hawaii wins 12-6.
