The Hawaii Tropics play the Seattle Storm in the best of five game Geoghegan Round of the Frick League Playoffs. The Tropics will begin the series at home with two games at Diamond Head. The Storm won the season series with the Tropics 10-6 overall and 6-2 in Hawaii. The Tropics have had better success in Seattle but were still just 4-4 in the Pacific Northwest.

Game 1- Tropics Ace SP Alaric Wullenweber got the ball for the series opener and he wilted under the bright lights. Wullenweber allowed 4 runs in the first and 6 total over his 3 1/3 innings. He gave up 8 hits but did strike out 9 batters.

Storm Number One Hector ‘Gauntlet’ Marquez was the complete opposite of Wullenweber. Marquez kept the Tropics hitters guessing all night as he pitched a complete game. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk. He struck out 7 but threw 117 pitches in the process.

LF Bastiao Fardos, who is seeing the ball well right now, was 2 for 4 with a solo homer.

RF Mike Campbell was 1 for 4 with a solo homer.

Seattle takes the home field advantage from Hawaii with an 8-2 win. Seattle leads the series 1-0.

Game 2- Young SP Niccolo “Notorious” Destefani lead the Tropics to a win to even the series. Destefani pitched 7 innings and allowed just 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 10 batters. He was relieved in the eighth by Douglas Wils with the game tied at 1. Wils allowed a hit and stuck out 2 in his inning of work.

The Hawaii offense then went to work in the bottom of the eighth. It began with a Fernando Rodriguez single. Rodriguez immediately stole second. After a strikeout by Miguel Rodriguez, Mike Campbell stepped to the plate. Campbell hit a grounder in the 5.5 hole for an infield hit that sent Rodriguez to third. Rodriguez then scored the go ahead run on a Gary Allen single. The Tropics would tack on two more runs to go into the ninth with a 4-1 lead.

Stephen Taub came on to close out the game. He allowed a hit and issued a walk but recorded the outs needed to preserve the Hawaii win.

Allen was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

Hawaii wins 4-1 and even the series at 1-1.

Game 3- The Storm give a rude welcome to the Tropics jumping on SP Jesus Gonzalez for 6 runs in his 2 2/3 innings of work. He gave up 6 hits and a walk, He struck out 2 and just made 51 pitches on the day. The bullpen did good work keeping Seattle scoreless the rest of the way but the Storm pitching was too good as the Tropics fall.

Miguel Rodriguez was 2 for 2 with a triple and a run scored.

Seattle wins 6-2 and lead the series 2-1.

Game 4- Needing a win to keep alive in the playoffs, Hawaii gets good pitching and timely hitting to even the series.

SP Zak Johnson threw everything he had at the Storm hitters going 5 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks and struck out 4 batters. He left the game with his team up 3-2. After RP Felipe Lopez pitched a clean sixth, RP Luis Santiago took the ball. Santiago allowed the game tying run in the seventh but held the Storm off from scoring more. Santiago finished with two innings pitched, a run on a hit and a walk. Stephen Taub got his second save in the playoffs allowing just a hit and threw just 7 pitches.

Bastiao Fardos was 3 for 4 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBI.

Gary Allen was 3 for 4 with a double and a run.

CF Ronnie Hubbard was 2 for 4 with two doubles, a walk, an RBI and a stolen base.

Hawaii wins 4-3 and evens the series at 2-2.

Game 5- This game is a story of one man. That man is Hawaii Ace Alaric Wullenweber. Wullenweber pitched a 1 hit shut out of the Seattle Storm in a must win Game 5. He struck out 12 batters in 107 pitches.

Gary Allen drove in all the Tropics runs going 1 for 3 with a double.

The night though belonged to Wullenweber. He was asked after the game, “What was the difference between the start in Game 1 and this start?’

Alaric said, “I didn’t have ant feel for my secondary pitches in Game 1 and relied too much on my fastball. They teed off on me. This time around the stitches felt good and I had my release point. Game over.”

Hawaii wins 2-0 and wins the series 3-2 over the Seattle Storm. The Tropics move on to the Doubleday Series with the Pacific Division Champ Long Beach Surfers.
