The Hawaii Tropics begin the playoffs in Chicago with the Black Sox in the Geoghegan Round.
Game 1-The Chicago Black Sox ambush Tropics Ace Alaric Wullenweber with 7 runs (4 earned) in just 2 innings of work and take the series opener.
Wullenweber allowed 1 in the first, 3 in the second and 3 in the third before getting pulled for
Juan “Rash” Hernandez. Alaric allowed 5 hits, a walk and struck out 3. Errors made things bad for the Tropics as 3B Gary Allen and RF Mike Campbell each committed a gaffe.
Hawaii managed a run after CF Ronnie Hubbard scored from third on a 2B Jack “Junkyard” Nichols single.
Chicago wins 9-1.
Game 2- The Tropics flip home field advantage on the arm of SP Zak Johnson . Johnson allows just 3 hits in 8 innings and strikes out 6 batters then RP Norm McConnell pitched a clean ninth to secure the win.
LF Bastiao Fardos goes 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Hawaii wins 3-1.
The series continues in Hawaii as the Tropics return home for two games vs Chicago at Diamond Head.
Game 3- Hawaii Starter Niccolo “Notorious” Destefani overcame 2 errors to help the Tropics take the win.
Destefani went 7 innings and allowed 1 earned run (4 runs) on 6 hits, a walk and struck out 7 batters.
RP Felipe Lopez pitched an inning and struck out 2.
Norm McConnell pitched the 9th and allowed 2 hits and struck out 1 to earn his 2nd save this playoff series.
C Ron Shiplack was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.
Hawaii wins 5-4.
Game 4- Battling for their playoff lives, the Chicago Black Sox score 2 runs in the eighth to tie the game at 4-4. After the Tropics score 1 in the bottom of the eighth, the Black Sox score 1 in the ninth to tie it 5-5. The game then went to extras when in the bottom of the tenth with 1 out, DH Ernest McBride crushed a Gilberto Sosa fastball to end the series.
Hawaii Starter Jesus Gonzalez allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, a walk and struck out 6 in 7 innings of work.
Norm McConnell pitched 2 innings and allowed a run on 5 hits and a strike out. He blew the save but picked up the win.
McBride was 2 for 5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.
RF Mike Campbell was 1 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI.
Hawaii wins 6-5 and moves on to the Doubleday Series against the powerhouse Yellow Springs Nine.
