The Hawaii Tropics head to Diamond Head for their season home opener versus the Sacramento Mad Popes in a four game series.


Game 1- In a Pacific Division pitching duel, the Sacramento Mad Popes score two runs in the top of the ninth and win at Hawaii.

Tropics SP Niccolo “Notorious” Destefani pitched 8 innings, allowed just 1 run on 3 hits, walked 1 and struck out 6 batters in a no decision.

DH Ernest McBride was responsible for the lone Hawaii run with a homer in the eighth inning. McBride ended the day 1 for 3 with a walk.


Sacramento wins 3-1.


Game 2- Mad Popes DH Cesar Feliciana and SS Thomas Kramer drive in 3 runs apiece while SP Shotaro Kawamura quiets the Tropics bats as the Mad Popes maul Hawaii.

1B Manuel Aguilar, Jr. was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Backup C Steffen Peterson was 1 for 3 with a homer. He scored two runs and drove in one.


Sacramento wins 9-2.


Game 3- Tropics SP Alaric Wullenweber cannot get any run support as his teammates waste his effort. Wullenweber goes 8 2/3 innings, gives up two runs on six hits and walks no one while striking out 8 batters. He falls to 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA.

Again, Ernest McBride provides their offense with a first inning homer. He was 1 for 3 and a walk.



Sacramento wins 2-1.


Game 4- Mad Popes Starter Dani Garcia baffles the Tropics batters with a brilliant five hit shutout. Garcia’s final line was 9 IP, no runs, 5 hits 2 walks and 4 Ks. Sacramento turned 3 double plays and had an OF assist to keep the Tropics off the scoreboard.

C Ron Shiplack was 2 for 3 with a double but was nailed at the plate.

Sacramento wins 9-0 and sweeps the series.

After the game GM James Walker was heard yelling, “Some coaches better take care of business or I will.”


The Tropics host the Vancouver Mounties at Diamond Head in a three game series.


Game 1- Hawaii SP Jesus Gonzalez was excellent versus the Mounties going 8 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk. He struck out 8 batters and won his first game of the season.

RP Norm McConnell pitched a clean ninth for the save, his second of the season.

Ron Shiplack was 1 for 3 with a homer.

Manuel Aguilar, Jr. was 2 for 4 with a double and a homer.


Hawaii wins 5-2.


Game 2- The Tropics offense provided some six runs in the seventh innings and the pitching staff survived a four run eighth by the Mounties to take the second game of the series.

Niccolo Destefani pitched 7 1/3 innings, gave up 6 runs (4 earned) on 10 hits. He walked no one and struck out 3. He won his first game of the season and has a 2.93 ERA.

McConnell pitched another clean ninth for his third save of the season.

RF Mike Campbell was 3 for 4. He singled, doubled and homered, drove in two runs an scored two runs. On defense, he threw two runners out at home.

DH McBride was 2 for 5. He doubled and homered, drove in five runs and scored two.

Manuel Aguilar, Jr. was 2 for 5. He doubled and homered, drove in two and scored two.


Hawaii wins 10-8.


Game 3- RF Mike Campbell hits a three run homer in extras to send the Tropics faithful home victorious and complete the sweep of the Vancouver Mounties.

Celebrate!

SP Luis Torres was hammered by the Mounies giving up 6 runs on 8 hits and a walk over just 2 innings of work.

RP Maxime Manceau came on in relief and allowed just 2 hits over 4 innings to give the Tropics Offense a chance to get the game close.

SS Miguel Rodriguez was 2 for 4 and scored a run.

McBride keeps up his good start with a 2 for 5 day. He homered, drove in three and scored two runs.

3B Gary Allen got into the act going 2 for 4 with a homer, He drove in two and scored two.

McBride said, “We need to give our pitchers some runs. They will get into a groove and we should be OK.”


Hawaii wins 11-8.

Reading this brought me as much enjoyment as watching my wife sip on her wine...
