The Tropic News 2042.31
The Hawaii Tropics play a crucial three game series with the California Crusaders at South Pacific Field.
Game 1- The Tropics score 2 runs in the top of the ninth to take a 4 run lead over the Crusaders then watch their bullpen implode and give up 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras. The game remained tied until the bottom of the thirteenth when the Crusaders scored to take the opening game of the series.
Zak Johnson gave the Trops a start that they needed under pressure. He had 7 IP, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits and a walk. He struck out 4 batters and was sent to the showers after the seventh with the lead.
2B Jack “Junkyard” Nichols was on base all night going 2 for 3 and worked Crusader pitching for 3 walks. He doubled, tripled, scored 2 runs, drove in a run and stole a base.
California wins 8-7.
Game 2- The Crusaders keep the pedal down to the floor and extend their lead over the Tropics in the Pacific.
CF Doeke Soethout gave another fine performance as he paced the offense. He was 3 for 4 with his 30th homer of the season, a two run shot in the third inning. He scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI.
Rookie SP Niccolo “Notorious” Destefani could not keep the Crusaders close. He pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up 6 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and a walk. He struck out 3 and falls to 6-4 with a 4.35 ERA. Destefani has had a good start to his career and should continue to flourish.
California wins 6-4.
Game 3- The Crusaders complete the sweep of the Tropics and win the Pacific Division. Trailing 3-0 in the sixth, California score 3 runs then followed that up the next inning with 4 more runs.
SP Jesus Gonzalez gave all he had going 5 1/3 innings, giving up no runs, allowed 6 hits and issued 4 walks while striking out 6 batters. He was deserted by the bullpen as they imploded again with 7 runs allowed.
3B Gary Allen was 2 for 3 with a double, solo homer, walk, 2 runs scored and an RBI.
California wins 7-3.
The ball and the playoffs are just out of reach
The Tropics return home for their final home stand with a small chance at a wildcard birth. They face the Seattle Storm in a three game series at Diamond Head.
Game 1- The Seattle Storm crush the reeling Tropics as time is quickly running out for the good guys.
SP Alaric Wullenweber had a rough start making it just 3 2/3 innings. He allowed 7 runs on 8 hits. He struck out 7 batters and falls to 15-10 with a 4.45 ERA.
Wullenweber said after the game, “I will take the heat for this game. My fastball was straight today, no tail to it. I was ramped up and just overthrowing.”
Seattle wins 8-1.
Game 2- The Tropics Offense produces some runs but the entire pitching staff seems to be gassed as no can hold a lead or get anyone out.
Stephen Taub was the first in a line of pitchers that didn’t show any consistency on the mound. He threw 4 innings, gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits and walked 2. He struck out 2 and made 70 pitches (40 strikes). He falls to 10-10 with a 5.15 ERA.
1B Manuel Aguilar, Jr. was 3 for 5 with 2 homers, a single, 2 runs and 4 RBI.
3B Gary Allen was 2 for 5 with a homer, triple, 2 runs and 2 RBI.
Seattle wins 13-7.
Game 3- Hawaii Starter Zak Johnson gets the Tropics back in the win column but it is a little too late. Johnson works for 6 innings, surrenders 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and a couple of walks. He struck out 5 and won his 10th game of the season.
DH Ettienne LaFitte was 2 for 3 with 2 homers 2 walks, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI.
Hawaii wins 7-2.
