2041.4 The Conundrum

Post by nerfHerder » Wed Mar 04, 2020 10:15 am

OK, it's a good problem to have, but that doesn't make it any easier. Three guys, two spots. Between first base and designated hitter, three men will vie for playing time in 2042. How will this work out? Here are the contenders.

The incumbent at First Base

Manuel Aguilar Jr.

"The Second Coming" had a down year compared to 2040, but his star still remains very bright. Aguilar absolutely destroys RHP, and can hold his own vs LHP, but is still more of a platoon bat. You can virtually lock him in against RHP next season, but he needs to get back to his 2040 self if he's going to stay there. More on that later.

The incumbent at DH

Ettienne R LaFitte

"Gung-Ho" has been everything that the offensively challenged Tropics had hoped for since signing as a free agent in 2040. His HR numbers came down from the 44 he hit in 2040 to a still respectable 28. He topped 100 RBI again, which in Hawaii has been rare. Signed to lead off, he had a .380 OBA and 55 steals. He's able to hit both RHP and LHP, so there isn't any issue there. Also he has Captain status as a clubhouse leader. That's nothing to shake a stick at.

The contender

Ernest McBride

McBride offensively is someone you create as a dream type player. This guy can hit both RHP and LHP, has decent speed, is great in the clubhouse, and is extremely loyal. When the team drafted him, the hope was that he could maybe fumble his way through an inning in LF. That never materialized. So the big question is, what do you do with him? He almost has to play everyday, right? First world problems here.

Conclusion

Again, it's a good problem to have. The guess is that Aguilar will play vs RHP, there isn't any reason not to think that. McBride almost certainly will get at bats vs RHP and LHP, unless he ends up in AAA, which seems crazy right now. The elephant in the room is LaFitte. He's making big money, he is undoubtedly a leader in the clubhouse, he is also still a productive everyday bat. I know the team has been listening to offers for him, but do they really want to do that? There is some time to come up with the answer. What do you all think?
