A 4-2 week has the Tropics sitting at 8-3, good for first place in the Frick Pacific, albeit only by a half of a game. Tropics fans will take that though, after suffering for many years. Let's look at some observations......
Ettienne LaFitte still looks like a keeper. LaFitte won the Frick League Player of the Week Award last week, and in the words of the BBN, he "ambushed FL pitching for 16 hits in 30 at-bats, 6 home runs and 17 RBIs, while hitting .533 and scoring 15 runs". That's pretty solid. Currently he is at .412/.474/.863 with 7 HR and a BBA leading 23 RBI. I have a feeling people around the league are going to tire of hearing his name, a "problem" that is just fine in the tropics.
Zak Johnson is really good. Again it's really early, but when you carry a 1.96 ERA through your first 23 innings, AND you're only 22 years old there will be some excitement. This is shaping to be the year he busts out after a solid 2039. Makes some fans actually a little excited for the future, though many know how foolish that may be.
Ernesto Alfiche?? We know he loves to collect Zimmer Awards at his SS position, but can he actually hit? Here is his slash line after 50 plate appearances, .405/.480/.619 with four doubles a triple and a homer. He's also swiped seven bags and has a +1.3 ZR at SS in this young season. With his WAR already at 1.0, this is looking like it may be a career year for him. He's also only 25 years old, so just another guy who may actually be around when the big arms arrive from the minors.
So 8-3 with a little stiffer competition than the first week, and it only gets more tough from here. By the end of the month we'll have a little idea of what this team is. Of course in baseball anything can happen, because baseball. While ownership just wants the club over .500, I think the clubhouse wants at least a wild card. Time will tell. Go Tropics!!
