2035/5 Homecoming

Post by nerfHerder » Mon Aug 20, 2018 8:29 pm

Last season, Yellow Spring GM Ron Collins generously offered to have Roberto Miranda shipped from the Nine back to Hawaii, a place where he stole 500 bases and was a leader for many years, especially the '25 Landis Champs. Hawaii GM Mike Bieschke foolishly said no, as he does a lot according to released reports. Miranda was then dealt to Phoenix, where he scuffled and was released. He ended up as a Goat in Nashville, where things didn't look much better. Once he was released, it was a no brainer. The Tropics had to bring "John John" back home.

The club put in its claim, and much to the delight of local fans, Miranda was headed back to the islands. Roberto has played more than many thought, making 20 starts in LF, and 29 appearances over all. The great part is the production. In 100 AB's for Hawaii, he is hitting .290/.383/.340 with three doubles and a triple. While he is mainly only hitting singles, he gets on base and makes smart decisions. In the field he hasn't committed an error. So naturally, after being left for dead, he will re-sign in Hawaii and end his career here?

Not quite. "We view Roberto as a part time player", GM MIke BIeschke said. "He would get situational starts, and be a pinch hitter off the bench. Really wnated for his leadership and to put butts in the seats". Miranda wasn't available for comment, but the word is that he thinks he can go somewhere and start. "Roberto feels he can play everyday", Bieschke said. "I know better than to doubt him, but I know where we stand. If no one throw money at him we'll try to get him back". So maybe the fairy tale ends? Either way it's a nice story in a season that has otherwise been pretty miserable.

I always liked Jon Jon from a far. At one point I was close to offering a trade for him when he was with Hawaii(probably about the time he went to YS9). In his prime he was a world class defensive LF who put up solid on base numbers and stole a bunch of bases while drawing lots of fans. Once his defense slipped though, he became just another guy. Happy to see him back with Hawaii.

He's had a nice career. With a little left in the tank. He could be a good role bench player for someone next year
