2034/3 A Look Back: Joe Wilcox

Post by nerfHerder » Mon Apr 23, 2018 3:57 pm

When career Tropic Joe Wilcox (7/7/6/6/7 Ratings) refused to sign an extension over the winter, Hawaii brass had a tough decision to make. Accept his option? Or let him walk? The team was most assuredly going to bottom out in the next season, so did they need an average first baseman? Even if he was a lifer and fan favorite? Obviously it was decided that his option would be declined, allowing Joe to sign with any BBA team that might want him. "We tried to get him to come back, even after we declined the option", GM Mike Bieschke said. "He just kept telling us he wanted to test the market. We just felt that with all of the times he'd been drilled by pitches over his career, that he was a slight risk". It turned out to be a pretty good move.

The Nashville Goats came calling in February with a 2 year, $11M offer. The Million Dollar Man quickly signed on the dotted line. You can't blame the Goats for making the move, Wilcox has been a productive player throughout his career. Coming into this season, he has had nine straight 20+ home run seasons. His career high of 35 HR's came just two seasons ago. Remember that Hawaii is a pitcher's park, so that makes it even more impressive. Joe had only surpassed 100 RBI once in his career, but that number is reliant on other's before you getting on base. So, does he have any gas left in the tank. Through 92 games (292 AB's), he is hitting .233/.318/.411 with 12 HR and 29 RBI. He's still getting hit by pitches at a high rate, due to the fact that he crowds the plate. He was easily number one all time in Hawaii in that category, and has to be number one in the BBA as well, at least over the last ten years. That really was the big reason that the Tropics were afraid to commit. In hindsight, it looks like a good move by Hawaii to let him walk, but not necessarily a bad move by Nashville to sign him. Let's see he bounces back in 2035, it wouldn't shock anyone that knows him.

Joe was not part of "The Plan." He was on the team before I got there. He's good enough for what we have going on now....but you can have him back for a cheap price.

Wilcox had a good run, and looks like he can play out the string for a little while.
