No one expects these Tropics to be any good anytime soon, but that doesn't mean there aren't expectations, some of which aren't being met. On the hitting side of things, there was much left to be desired. So, Ad Collins, the legendary hitter during his time, was let go. "He was on the last year of his contract, so we let him explore other opportunities," GM Mike Bieschke recently said. What those opportunities are is anyone's guess, but the team never really got going under his leadership. The next move was a little more of a head scratcher.
Longtime minor league hitting coach Pedro Alfonso was called upon to replace Collins. Alfonso has spent his whole career in the Hawaii organization, mostly at the Single A level. The results so far have been pretty good. The team has jumped out of the cellar in most categories, and the players have championed Alfonso's style. "It's worked out," GM Mike Bieschke said. "We hooked him up with a little extension after some of the guys came to me with good things to say". So far so good they say.
