"Could-ja brush my teeth first?" Shoeless' glossed-over eyes widened as he tried watching himself bring a blurry index finger to his mouth. He clicked a fingernail sporadically against the front of his teeth. "You knows ... ha, I said knows ... you knows, before you jab me nighty-night with one of your needles."

The green-eyed woman -- her face blank, for her even a slight eye-roll would show too much emotion or care -- ignored him as she walked next to the hospital bed he was laying on. One of her assistants pushed him silently down the hall towards the makeshift lab next to the concessions storage room beneath home plate. The old lab would have been preferable, but a power beyond the green-eyed woman's understanding had demolished it over the offseason.

"Had a bit too many gins and tonics," shoeless continued. "Make 'em with lime. But got that acidy feeling, like its eatin' my 'namal."

"Silence," the green-eyed woman said without looking at him.

Shoeless tilted his head towards her. "You knows... knows." He grinned and tried -- and failed -- to wink. "You'd be beautiful if you weren't such a ..."

He was underwater. In the muck. Entwined within the roots of reeds and cattails. He felt nothing but the dull chill of the slough. He heard nothing. Could see nothing.

But he knew.
The muskrats would be coming soon.
To chew at his flesh. To gnaw on his bones.

He wondered if they would taste the lime.

The air smelled of stale perfume, like a cheap motel room after the prostitute leaves her John to call his wife and let her know he's on his way home. At least, that's how Shoeless envisioned it every time Kate Fiscus was around him.

"It's about time you woke up," Kate said. She was sitting next to his bed, a hand laid in fake concern on his opposite thigh, her wrist grazing his groin. "We came as soon as we got the call."

"We?" Shoeless’ eyelids fluttered shut. The light from the room far too bright for him.

"Oh, we're all here." She motioned with her other hand around the room. "The entire Fire Shoeless club is here."

"But I traded them like you said."

"You did. But what was our agreement?"

"Can we talk about this later?"

She slid the hand that was on his thigh slowly across his groin, giving his dick a squeeze before standing up to answer him. "The agreement was to get nothing but trash prospects in return." She wiggled the short skirt she wore back into a modest position, for her anyway. "Instead, you sent Flores and Wullenweber and their nine Nebraskas away and got a seemingly decent return: some short term fixes for the rotation and four quality prospects to spatter throughout the minors."

"I'm sorry. I didn't think..."

"That's right! You didn't think." She nodded to three men behind her who shoeless didn't recognize and walked out of the room. Taking their cue, the three men walked over to Shoeless and began beating him with their fists.

Shoeless felt nothing. The green-eyed woman had removed any sense of pain long ago.
