Foul Play Suspected in Prospect’s Demise

When Sacramento acquired minor league prospect Troy Manuel in return for veteran reliever Aaron Anderson, a few eyebrows rose. But when, a few days later, Manuel was making hash of baseballs on the club’s short-A field in Philipsburg (1 HR, 3 RBI, .500/.500/.917 in four games), some locals began to get interested. A broken kneecap later, that interest spread to Philipsburg law enforcement officials.
“There were these guys suddenly hanging around Sint Maartin Stade,” said Chief Sergeant Jumbo Casa, who has been in that office for the past two decades and is known to be a big Saints fan. “We’re used to a certain quality of baseball player here in the islands, and Manuel was looking like the real deal, next thing you know we’ve got a couple of thugs with Big City mugs loitering around the dugout, and then the kid turns up with a broken kneecap. Doesn’t take a mind like mine long to come up with the fact that these stiffs were from Chicago, and they’d been sent to make sure their trade didn’t blow up on them.”
The Chief Sergeant has subsequently put a lockdown on all flights off of the island, and released an APB to apprehend the alleged attackers.
“We’ll get to the bottom of this, you can bet,” Jumbo said. “And when we do, it won’t be pretty for them.”
Meanwhile, the second baseman’s season is now officially over. He will spend the winter convalescing on the beaches.
