53.05 Key Additions Net Returns

Post by shoeless.db » Mon Jan 30, 2023 10:50 am

The 2053 Popes accumulated 104 wins, an increase of 17 from a season ago. Here's a look at the key additions over the offseason making this improvement possible:

** SS Badr Isam - acquired via trade with the Chicago Black Sox.
Isam's price tag was hefty, as the Popes sent five BBA-viable players to Chicago, including top prospect Carlos Moya. The trade paid dividends in Isam's first season in Sacramento as the sure-handed shortstop led the Frick in batting average while accumulating a zone rating of 14.8, ending with a career best 4.6 WAR. The Popes signed Isam to a six-year extension during the season worth a total of $81 million.

** 3B Alex Ramirez - acquired via free agency (1 yr/$13m).
Even at the ripe, young age of 37, Ramirez continued to put up elite level numbers at the hot corner, slashing .294/.371/.503 and accumulating 6.9 WAR. The popes signed Ramirez to a one-year extension worth $11 million for 2054.

** 1B Ricardo De Jesus - acquired via free agency ($3yr/$14m).
The GBC alumni proved players crossing the ocean can find continued success playing against the "big boys" of the BBA. De Jesus solidified the top of the order with a .416 OBP, which is profound as the entire Mad Popes roster is made up almost exclusively of leadoff men. The 28-year-old Panamanian put up 3.2 WAR despite hitting just one homer while platooning at first base against right-hand pitching.

** SP Thomas Turner - acquired via free agency ($6yr/$59m).
What Turner lacks in stature (he stands just 5'10"), he makes up for in moxey on the mound as he led the league in BB/9, allowing just 1.2 walks per nine innings. His 15 wins and 3.44 ERA resulted in 4.2 WAR, proficient numbers from the Popes' number three starter.

** LF Juan Martinez - acquired via free agency (1yr/$1.7m).
Brought in for his leadership qualities, the Popes' captain put up gaudy numbers from his left-field platoon spot against left-hand pitching. Another GBC alumni, Martinez put up mediocre numbers while with Riyadh, but found success across the sea in his platoon role, resulting in Sacramento extending him two additional season worth $2m a piece.

I'm curious to see when Chicago calls up Moya. He's very similar to one of my prospects, Alexander Swanson.

I was picking between Turner or Dan Small in free agency. I chose poorly.

Swanson looks like he'll be a solid contributor. I love his pitch repertoire.

I would love to see a reliever conversion on him!
