*** continued from here
Shoeless felt himself melting. Morphing into liquid. Drip, drip, dripping from the sides of the gurney onto the tiled floor of the operating room, which spun and scrunched and flipped around him. No matter its orientation, he continued to drip, splattering onto the white tiles in brilliant blues and yellows. And, at last, only greens. All shades of green. Like a forest. A forest alive. And breathing.
He was all parts of himself. Every droplet was him. Every splatter a part of his soul. And every splatter holding a thousand of his eyes, cast out like leaves fluttering off branches. And they all looked outward.
Seeing all. Seeing himself.
And her.
The green-eyed woman. No longer in scrubs. No longer with her dark hair pulled behind her ears.
She hovered over him. Legs crossed and in a sitting position, floating. Giant horns, like an elks, protruded from her head, and her eyes, deeper green than he recalled, bored into him. The room continued to swirl. And he continued to drip. But she remained motionless above him. A predator overlooking its prey.
At last, when it seemed every part of him had dripped to the floor, she raised her hands above her head, a torc in one hand, a serpent in the other. And she became bright. A brilliant green. Brighter and brighter. Overwhelming him and his thousand eyes until the world around him collapsed. Drowning him in her green.
He gasped and gasped until he awoke. He was dangling from a cluster of a basswood tree, face down. Each of his limbs tied to a separate trunk.
Below him was a fire. Raging.
And Shoeless didn't know if this was the real world or if he was still under anesthesia. Or if the prayer to Camacho had been made. Or the offering.
But the fire felt too real. He writhed as it licked at him. And, he writhed inside thinking of his Mad Popes not making the playoffs due to his failures.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
