47.04 The Death of a Walrus

Post by shoeless.db » Wed Jul 07, 2021 3:26 pm

The body of an obese man slumped like a walrus carcass in the chair opposite the general manager's desk. Large pools of dried blood covered the walnut floor of the office. In the blood and around the body, shuffled shoe prints marked the steps of a diabolical dance.

The man's throat had been slashed. Several clumsy strokes were carved through his fatty neck like a child trying to carve a Halloween pumpkin. The man was naked. Blood-soaked ropes bound his arms and legs.

It took the general manager’s secretary several seconds to comprehend the horror that morning. Once she did, she let out an ear-piercing scream. The authorities were called. Police descended on the office. Reports were taken. Pictures snapped. And the body of Ralph Dewaldo, Exalted One of the Exalted Mystics of the Camacho Order, was wheeled from the stadium.

Meanwhile, across town, in the parking lot of a deserted Wendy’s building, general manager Shoeless laid unconscious in the bed of a rusted Ford pickup, still wet from an early morning storm. His arms and legs were bound just as Dewaldo’s. He was also just as naked.

If there would have been any passersby, which there wasn't, they would have witnessed two men running from the Wendy's building and into the pickup. They would have seen one of the men slam the pickup into reverse, hit hard on the gas to backup, and screech the pickup to a halt. They would have watched as the driver slammed the pickup down into drive, floored the gas, and skid out on the wet pavement. The passersby would have noticed smoke billowing from the open front door, heard an explosion, and panicked from seeing the building engulfed in flames. They would have been able to tell the police the rusted pickup had raced north towards the interstate. But, regardless, they wouldn't have known that Shoeless' naked body had been rag-dolling in the back from all the motion. A fact that would have helped Shoeless in the coming weeks.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
