A couple years back a plant started growing in a crack in the pavement along I-80 west of Sacramento. I watched it grow and marveled at its audacity and perseverance. I knew it was a matter of time before the poor thing would be mowed down either by the Highway Department or a distracted driver. But the thing kept growing and on one bright July morning it blossomed the most beautiful purple flower. For a week, I enjoyed the unlikely site on my drive into the city.
Why did I tell you this story? Well, like that unlikely flower on I-80, GM Shoeless provided the Mad Popes' fan base a glimmer of beauty this week by signing Free Agent second baseman, Francisco Arrendondo to a five year deal. Through six BBA seasons, the two-time Puckett winner has amassed 25.2 WAR and hit 166 home runs.
"I'm not going to lie. The thought of giving up some defense at second base gave me hives for several days," Shoeless said at the press conference introducing Arrendondo. "But the offensive boost Francisco will bring should more than make up for it."
With Arrendondo entrenching his spot at second base against both righties and lefties, the acquisition will push Henri Charriere to shortstop in place of defensive wizard Thomas Kramer. Kramer will likely be used as a defensive replacement to close out games.
"I've never been this excited about our lineup since coming here," continued Shoeless. "We may not be 16th in homeruns for the fifth straight season."
Regardless of the new hyped lineup, Shoeless has proven over the years he'll find a way to hinder this team in other ways. He's simply set us up for a longer fall this time around.
