45.08 The Slam

Post by shoeless.db » Mon Jan 04, 2021 3:33 pm

With the recent departure of David 'Horrible' Simpson, the Mad Popes find themselves reeling to make up for his other-worldly contributions. Simpson was traded to the River Monster of Twin Cities along with pitching veteran Tony Alomar for a large spattering of youngsters.

"You can't just replace Simpson overnight," GM Shoeless said via teleconference. "Seeing him apply his craft on a day-in, day-out basis made all the people around him better. I honestly don't know if we have the talent in our clubhouse to garner even 10% of the finger snaps Simpson received for even his lesser efforts."

Simpson's public work received rave reviews from BBA pundits, with many calling his abilities daring and a breath of fresh air. But, behind the scenes and away from the bright lights of the Basilica at Muskrat Slough, those who knew him best spoke of his unrelenting desire to be the best.

"You'd never find him without his pen and paper in between his turn in the batting cage," said Sacramento starting pitcher Eustace Tilley. "He was always jotting down notes, and he'd get so damned excited when inspiration struck. His perseverance to his craft was contagious."

In an effort to begin the transition to a new poet laureate for the team, the Mad Popes held the first round of an open poetry slam after their 9-8 extra-inning victory over rival San Fernando Wednesday night. Team trainer and former middle school English substitute teacher Virgil Vaughn was designated to judge the competition, which was held at Kulak's Woodshed off Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Valley Village.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
