Notable Selections:
Round 1 -- OF/IF Dallas Dixon
Round 2 -- 3B Fred Roy
Round 3 -- RP Alex Payne
Round 4 -- RP Bob Martine
Round 5 -- RP Luis Ramos
Round 6 -- RP Richard Bryant
Round 8 -- RP Calvin Larimore
Analysis:
Sacramento went heavy on high contact bats at the beginning of the draft with two tweener defensive players in Dixon and Roy. Dixon projects as a mediocre left fielder or a mediocre second baseman with elite level contact skills from the plate. Roy, a likely overreach for the 2nd round, was nabbed due to his ability to play an acceptable 3B while projecting above average contact (8) against right hand pitching. Both players exhibit great speed and baserunning skills for 18 year olds and have solid mental makeup.
"There ain't shit for guys who can put the ball in play for a hit in the minors right now throughout the whole damn BBA. Sacramento drew back a couple arrows and hope to score some bullseyes on these two projects" -- Hankery Jones, Brewster Ballplayer Blog
General Manager Shoeless continued his tradition of finding relief pitching prospects in the middle to late rounds of the draft with the selection of seven of them between rounds three and thirteen. All seven profile middle relief, inning-eater potential with a leaning towards inducing ground balls. In years past, Shoeless utilized the organization's excess relief core from the minors to bolster trade offers, but, due to his over-ambitious swapping, the Popes now need a fresh group of young relievers to one day pitch in Sacramento.
"How many fucking average bullpen arms can one team draft? Seven. The answer is seven." -- Beatrice Jaochima, Facebook post
Filling out the draft roster, the Popes added much needed organizational defensive depth up the middle of the diamond with the selection of four middle infielders and three centerfielders. These players will likely never sniff the inside of a Brewster clubhouse, but their skill-set will contribute to the success of the organization as a whole.
"Well, you can't make chicken soup out of chicken shit." -- Shoeless' dad (actual quote)
