44.52 Bad April/May Dooms Popes

September 22, 2044 | Mad Popes Record: 72-82, 21 GB, eliminated, 3-3 last sim

We've heard it spoken several times on the various BBA podasts -- a good April can't get you into the playoffs, but a bad April can certainly keep you out of them. Sacramento proved the statement to be true this season, compiling a terrible 9-17 record in April and following it with a 10-18 month of May. The awful start was too steep of a hill to climb despite the Mad Popes' best effort in the warmer months which saw them put up a 53-47 record since the beginning of June.

"We knew our starting pitching was suspect to start the season," said GM Shoeless. "We just didn't think our offense would decide to be awful, also."

The offensive drought to start the season has been a recurring theme for Sacramento, and its lesson is one Shoeless is slowly getting into his thick head.

"We picked up Ramon Pagan with a big free agent deal this offseason thinking his big bat was the answer," Shoeless continued. "Turns out his big bat is a fair weather bat, literally. We're just going to have to go all in on the Right WindTM philosophy."

I know we here at the Donkeagle Press have ridiculed Shoeless for his decidedly mad decisions, but his Right WindTM approach did culminate in 104 wins in 2043. The 2043 Mad Popes profiled a staunch pitching staff, backed up with the league's best defensive infield, and a bunch of speedy bat to ball hitters. Those 104 wins were compiled while hitting just 156 homeruns (15th in the Frick).

As the 2044-2045 offseason approaches, the question out of Sacramento will be whether Shoeless decides to double-down on the beat Camacho drums to him or if he, once again, succumbs to the lure of pagans.

"Homeruns," said Exalted Mystic Ralph Dewaldo. "A lure of the damned."
