43.04 Dealing in Unicorns

January 2, 2043

"He inquired already? About Schultz? We just put him on the block."

Sacramento General Manager Shoeless was out walking his dog in Sacramento's Capitol Park when his phone rang with new Assistant GM Javier Valentin on the other end.

"I have to be honest. I'm still a bit hesitant on dealing Schultz," Shoeless continued, stopping to let Donk sniff around a corner fence post. "He was my first ever draft pick as a BBA GM. I have some sentimental value attached to that guy. Plus, he's what we need right now -- a right-hand bat corner outfielder."

---

Back at home an hour later, Shoeless reclined in his old lazy-boy with his laptop on his lap, scouring the scouting reports from his top Atlantic scout. If he was going to deal Schultz, he wanted something worthwhile in return. Sacramento wasn't in sell mode, so any trade needed to make sense now and in the future. Hmm, Shoeless thought, he may be open to moving this guy as he seems to be blocked right now with other young talented players.

Shoeless sent a quick text to Valentin:

SHOELESS -- Check to see if he's open to moving Charriere. See what it would take to make a deal including Schultz and him.

VALENTIN -- Hmm... I like Charriere, too. But, boss, we already have a couple shortstops in Sacramento.

SHOELESS -- Who says he has to be a shortstop? Ask him.

VALENTIN -- Ok, sorry.

VALENTIN -- He says he's open to trading him, but he was his first ever draft pick in Montreal. So, there's some sentimental value there.

SHOELESS -- Ha! I was thinking the same thing about Schultz. Offer him a couple different deals. Maybe include the speedy unicorn in one. Maybe a stable full of relievers in another.

VALENTIN -- Done.

VALENTIN -- Ok, he responded. He's intrigued. He's going to take some time and review it.

SHOELESS -- Yeah, that makes sense. Let me know.

---

The sun was setting in the city now, and Shoeless, never being a man blessed with patience, sat waiting in his lazy-boy, throwing a tennis ball against the opposite wall of his small apartment. "Damn it, Donk. I want the kid."

Donk looked up from his pet bed with annoyed interest.

"Shit, I'll probably regret this."

Shoeless took a sip of his Zima, picked up his phone, and sent the following text to Valentine:

SHOELESS -- I can't wait. I want Charriere. Put the two deals together. All five: Schultz, the unicorn, and the three relievers.

VALENTIN -- Umm, boss. You sure?

SHOELESS -- Yes. Send it. Tell him I want an answer tonight.

VALENTIN -- I think we should sleep on this. That's a lot of good ballplayers out of our org.

SHOELESS -- Send the damn offer.

VALENTIN -- Fuck.

Nice read. I really didn't want to give up Charriere. But felt it was too good of a deal to pass on.

Sounds like a typical thought process in one of my trades - just subsitute the reclinder with a bean bag chair and the zima with some cheetos.

I admit, I had an eye on the other shortstop (Fakihi). Just could not quite work out a deal. I like the deal from the Montreal side slightly better, but it is hard to argue getting a guy like Charriere either.

That’s really what it game down to for me — getting a guy like Charriere. I felt like he was too unique of a player to miss out on due to being unwilling to give up the goose a bit. His skill set screams Sacramento, so I had to have him.
