Alberto Franco
"It's always difficult to make these types of moves, especially when we're heading into the final months of the season," General Manager Shoeless said in an impromptu press conference held on the veranda outside South Pacific Field. "Alberto was a class act for the organization, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward."
Sources close to California brass stated Shoeless began losing faith in Franco after three consecutive one-and-done series in the playoffs from 2039-2041. The recent string of losses to Heartland division opponents along with unmotivated play from the Crusaders in general led to the firing.
"Listen, and no offense to Alberto, but the guys just aren't showing up to the ballpark fired up to win games," Shoeless continued. "We felt a change of leadership in the manager position would light a fire under the team. Hell, we're 6 1/2 games up in the Pacific, but the ballplayers walk into the facility like they just don't care about competing. That shit can't happen."
Franco walks away from the club with a career 914-652 (.584) record. Along with his one Landis victory, he led the team to five division championships and looked to be on his way to number six this season. Franco's contract was due to expire at the end of the season.
When reached for comment, Franco had the following to say: "I gave this organization everything I had. It's terribly disappointing to have it all end like this, but I love every guy in that clubhouse, and I hold no ill will to the front office. They did what they felt was best."
A replacement has not yet been named.
