41.09 The Unicorn

Post by shoeless.db » Thu Jan 09, 2020 12:36 pm

"The doctor wants the unicorn."

"You've said that three damn times already," General Manager Shoeless slammed his fist on his desk and glared at his assistant General Manager, Anton Vogts. "Why the hell does he want this Pete Davis character?"

"Dr. Kocherschmeltz would like to, let's say, better understand his genetic makeup," Vogts said in a heavy German accent.

Shoeless pushed hard against his desk and rolled back in his chair, resigned. "We need pitching, Vogts. Geez, there's seven pitchers above him on our board right now. Seven!" Shoeless turned and looked out the window at an empty parking lot outside South Pacific Field. "And, we have two other position players our scouts have higher. I mean ... geez, I understand Davis goes by the nickname, Gambler, but, hell, I'll be the one gambling with my job if I draft him."

"The doctor believes he shows an uncommon athletic skill set. Much potential."

"Do you know how many damn games you win with potential?" Shoeless asked, still staring out the window. "You win zero games with potential. But, you're sitting here in my office telling me to draft some guy with 'much potential'. Sure, he may end up being the quickest and best base runner the BBA has ever seen, but, good lord, he'll never hit his way on the bases to show it off."

"The doctor ... "

"Damn it, Vogts. Quit telling me what the doctor wants. We're drafting for a professional baseball team here. We're not drafting rats to run on a hamster wheel in some ... ," Shoeless turned to yell directly at Vogts, but hesitated when he saw the green eyed woman now standing in the doorway to his office. " ... pseudo-science lab."

"This is not a discussion," Vogts said, turning to look at the green eyed woman then back at Shoeless. "You will draft the unicorn."

---------------

Sacramento (AP) -- With their first pick in the 2041 Amateur Draft, the California Crusaders selected center fielder, Pete Davis, out of Columbus, Ohio. The 17-year-old Davis wowed scouts and coaches around the league with his Olympic level speed and base running instincts. His prowess at the plate is still a work-in-progress, but he has shown glimpses of an advanced understanding of the strike-zone. Defensively, Davis grades out at elite levels in outfield range, error, and arm.

"Everyone in the organization is excited to start working with Davis," said General Manager Shoeless. "He was really the only amateur we had our eye on, and we were elated to see him drop into our lap at 35th overall. It would have been a major disappointment to me personally to see him end up in another organization."

According to team officials, Davis will begin his professional career for the Crusader's rookie league affiliate, the Berkeley Golden Bears.

So he knows the difference between a ball and a strike but can't touch the ball once he makes up his mind to swing?

He's got Mons Raider disease. How can someone that fast and with impeccable base stealing ability only have 8 range. He must be daydreaming out there and gets terrible jumps.

One session with Herr Kocherschmeltz and those daydreams may turn into nightmares!

I was definitely intrigued by the young lad. At a minimum, it will be fun to follow his journey and having him end up in your hands ought to prove fruitful for the league's entertainment.
