He woke startled. Sweaty. Out of breath.
"Who's there?"
His hand scrambled for his lamp, searching for the switch.
"Who's there?" He called again. Desperate.
He found the switch. The lamp popped on. There was no one.
The man tossed the covers off him and sat on the edge of the bed, his hands covering his face.
He looked down and saw a note at his feet.
"Camacho."
He grabbed the note and read.
---
Oh, the grace of a thousand horses
grazing on zealous grass
growing numb in its glory for the sky
oh, the beauty of a thousand horses
falling one by one
from a weed within
oh, the allure of a thousand horses
rotting in tall grass
unknowing, unwilling to know
The deed has begun.
---
The man tossed the note onto his nightstand. He laid back down.
"It's begun." He said to himself.
He took a deep breath.
Then another.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
