Sacramento (AP) -- The California Crusaders are off to their worst start in recent years after losing six straight games and dropping their record to 3-9. The dismal play has been a complete team effort as every team ranking falls well below expectations.
"You're not going to win many games when you're awful on offense, awful on defense, and awful on the mound," said manager Alberto Franco. "Things better turn around quick."
General Manager, Shoeless Olmsted, took several steps in facilitating a turn around by making a flurry of moves in hopes of improving the ball club. First, he sent struggling relievers, Theirry Simonnet and Guus Alberink, to AAA Clash City along with rookie left-fielder, Júlio Medina. Medina opened the season in a 2 for 26 slump.
Simonnet (135.0 ERA); Alberink (16.2 ERA); Medina (.077 Batting Ave.)
"We're not going to wait around for guys to find themselves," said GM Shoeless. "Baseball is a tough business. California expects winners. I expect players to show up each day and perform for this city and this organization."
GM Shoeless filled the vacated rosters spots with relievers, Edwin Stubbs, who started the year on the injured list, and Pepe Flores. Also called up was right-fielder and the organization's #8 prospect, Luis González. The plan was to give González time to ripen a bit in AAA before receiving a call up to California, but the slow start from both the team and Medina forced the issue. González destroyed AAA pitching through the first two weeks of the season, slashing a mean .420/.444/.860 in 50 at bats for Clash City, including five long balls.
"We're hoping what we lose defensively will be more than made up for in the batter's box," said GM Shoeless. "It's time for this team to start mashing and putting some crooked numbers up in the box score."
