Crusaders fans! I implore you, let's not get too excited about this year's free agent class! "Why, Offie?" you ask. Well, there are a few reasons. Reason the first, it just isn't that good. B, our beloved Crusaders don't have any cap space. Right around five million. That won't buy much. Which is a crazy thing to say, right? Man, five million would be enough for multiple Offies to live happily ever after ... but it won't buy you much baseball talent.

This is OK though. Because our Crusaders are pretty darn good already, annd don't really have to many holes. The single biggest upgrade would like be at third base, where Nico Eijpe just seemed over-matched by Brewster level pitching for much of last year. If you find a mashing third baseman who is willing to take that kind of money, let me know. He needs to fire his agent. Maybe he'd hire Offie! I mean, looking at the player demands this year, it can't be that hard! You just look at the salaries of he top 20 or so players in the league, and ask for that much for six years. When the team offers you less, you ask for more! It seems a ... curious ... negotiation strategy. But what a life! Did you know they make a percentage of the contract? Well, I bet you probably did, but I just wanted to bring it up. What a job! Offie should have been an agent. He could have millions by now. Enough to buy a home so he wouldn't have to live with Mama .... Offie could buy Mama a home! Of her own! Where Offie doesn't live! And servants! So she'd have someone else to nag .. I mean .. um ..boss arou .. eh .. direct.

*Sigh* but then Offie wouldn't be your humble blogger, bringing you all things Crusaders, which he enjoys very much. Ah well. Hmm .. so our Crusaders don't need much. We could use a LOOGY. Knud Zeitler will be back thankfully, and reports are good about his recovering well from Tommy John, but he's the only lefty in the bullpen, and he may be starting by season's end. We could also use a right handed utility infielder to take over for Atilio Seabra. And a right handed OF bat. All three starters are lefties. Maybe a right handed DH, although Cris Vazquez is still around. He was okay in limited action last year. Anyway, you see the theme here. Platoons and specialists.

You might wonder if the bullpen would need help after losing Reynaldo Garza's incredible 120 innings from last year. That's like TWO regular relievers! But it's okay. Don't panic Crusaders fans! Knud Zeilter as mentioned before will be back, and there are some good young bullpen looking arms ready to take over. Augusto Cardenas has an absolute hammer curveball and pinpoint command of a fastball that touches 98. Pepe Flores appears to have completed his conversion from starter to late inning guy, and didn't allow a run in five innings last year. I still have some hopes for Robert Moran as a middle inning, lower leverage option as well. I know he struggled last year, but hopefully with some big league innings under his belt, he'll settle in. Look, I know I do this a lot, but "Under his belt?" That's a weird saying. I mean, the only thing under my belt is my pants. While my belts do an admirable job of holding up my pants, they aren't really designed to hold other things in place, or store experience or become some sort of repository of knowledge. Huh. Weird.

Also there's Juan Lopes, who may start someday but for now is running out of things to prove in AAA. HE .. um .. look .. I NEED to look into this "Under his belt" thing. I can't help it. Once I start to wonder ...
